I hope you guys can help me with this.

My DH and I have been invited to a black tie wedding. Neither of us has ever attended a black tie wedding. We've been to a black tie optional, but not one so formal as a black tie. DH tells me he's not wearing a tux to the wedding. He's going to go in a regular suit and tie. I'm a bit leary of this. Won't he look out of place? Have you been to a black tie wedding before and did all the men follow through and wear a tux? I also wonder what I should wear. Should it be a full length dress?

Oh, and since I know the formality of weddings vary throughout the country, the wedding will be in Baltimore, MD. It is an evening wedding during the summer.

Thanks for any input.

I have never attended one either, but here are some suggestions from the web (although not region specific):

From the knot (http://lifestyle.msn.com/relationships/articletkt.aspx?cp-documentid=8319312)

from about.com (talks a little about region) (http://fashion.about.com/cs/glossary/a/partydefinition.htm)

the black tie guide (wow...this is really detailed!) (http://www.blacktieguide.com/Basics/3A_Dress_Codes1.htm)

Hope this helps!

Maybe you could ask the bride and groom specifically what they had in mind. I figure that's the easiest way to find out! :)

i would also suggest asking the bride and groom - they know best what they wanted... if you don't want to ask them though, you can also ask members of the WP as they are often kept in the know...

typically though, black tie (not optional) means long formal dress and tux...

Thanks everyone for your input. Hubby finally realized he needs to wear a tux. He heard from someone, who went to a black tie recently, that almost no one wore a tux. People just blew it off, so DH thought he'll blow it off too. It doesn't seem very respectful to the bride and groom to do that, but DH resents the idea of having to rent or buy a tux. After talking to a lot of people though, the consensus was for him to get the tux. If he wears a suit and tie and everyone else wears the tux, he is going to feel uncomfortable and I will feel uncomfortable too. So, there you have it. Tux it is!
