View Full Version : When Are You Doing the First Dance?

One of the things I noticed back on UW was there were differing opinions on when to do the first dance... So, I was wondering when are YOU going to do your first dance? The common two ways I've seen it done are either immediately following introduction OR immediately following cake.

We had ours after the dinner.

We are not doing a cake cutting...but we are doing the first dance right after the dinner. I wish we could do it after the grand entrance, but our reception site sets the head table up on the dance floor...so we can't do it until the headtable is moved or taken down. :(

Where I am from the first dance is done after dinner to start out the dancing. There is no grand entrance before dinner. We do a "Grand March" in the middle of the evening which is followed by the bouquet toss, garter toss, etc. The cake may be cut before or after. We ended up cutting our cake before dinner since it was served as dessert.

Ours will be right as we enter. I like the idea that the DJ will hopefully not have to shoo any kids off the dance floor and all eyes will be on us at that point so there will be no needing to get everyone's attention. Plus I have two friends there who are taking photos, so I'd like them to be able to put their cameras down and actually eat and all that stuff, so if the dance is taken care of, one less thing to worry about.

I would like to have my first dane right after we enter. Then have the father daughter dance right there after as well. This way we can get that over and done with. And then its eating and cutting cake afterwards, and then everyone can dance. Thats how I would like it but I am not sure if that is how it will happen.

If it can't happen that way then I would like to have it after we eat. But I know that I will be nervous about the dance so I would like to have it over with earlier on.

Intros, dinner, first dance - I'm sure we will be starving by then, so we are definitely eating first! :)

Because we aren't having dancing for our guests, I think I would like our dance to be the very last thing before we all leave the luncheon. I think this will be a nice ending to the day, and won't leave people feeling akward like there should be more dancing.

I think we will do our entrance...come in and cut the cake right away, have the speeches, then eat...dinner will then be followed by the first dance. :)

We had ours a little while after we ate our cake - not more than a half an hour.

All the weddings I have been to have had the first dance after dinner. You have the grand entrance, then you have the speeches, then dinner then dancing and then cake and then more dancing. So we are going to follow that.

Well, we can't do ours after the grand entrance, because our head table will most likely be on the dance floor. So it will probably be: entrance, dinner, dance, cake cutting :)

We did ours right after our entrance. I wanted to get those dances out of the way and start the party.

We didn't end up having ours till a little into the night. Scott was the one who brought it up, cause I actually was having fun and forgot about it. We did our first dance and invited people to join us, which only our groomsmen and bridesmaid and my parents joined us. Then right after we did the father daughter dance. SO it was nice to get those out of the way....even if it was later on in the evening.

We just winged everything. Did it when we felt like doing it. No time schedule for anything but supper.:laugh3:

Immediately following the grand entrance. That is how our venue and DJ both said we should do it, and its the only way i've ever seen it done at weddings around here, so i didn't mind that they said "this is when its done".

We originally wanted to have it after the big entrance, but since we are having an evening ceremony, dinner wouldn't be served until 7-7:30, at which point I will probably be starving because I probably will forget to eat the whole day hehe. So we'll probably have it after dinner.
