Sue & Terry 2nd timers 4/17/2005
my name is Sue, and I'm a second time bride..
Background..
Terry & I had known each other for about 20 years.. not closely but as
friends and parents who had kids in the same sports. My sons did BMX
( Bicycle motor cross) and so did his eldest daughter.
When my marriage ended in the early 1990's, I still stayed involved in the sport , it was a social outlet for me and after having been married for nearly 20 years I sure wasnt ready to get out there in the big bad dating world.
Terry's marriage ended a few years later, and 12 months after that we started dating.
We didnt live together for the first 3 years.. family committments, jobs and just general life.. but he moved in with my sons & I in March 2000. Life was good and we were happy.
The Proposal
Christmas eve 2004, we only had 2 sons at home now and they had both gone out with friends for the evening. Terry & I had finished putting the presents under the tree, and were sitting down with a drink. He asked me if he could give me one of my presents now as he couldnt wait.. I didn't want to, but he did anyway. He came out of the bedroom with a big box. I opened it , and there was a smaller box inside.. I opened that one and
there was an engagement ring. He dropped to one knee and said" Sue I love you please be my wife."
of course I said yes.. we didn't tell the kids that night.. we waited until everyone had opened their presents on Christmas morning. One of the boys asked what Terry had given me, and I just put out my hand and said" THIS."
It was one of the best Christmases ever. His daughters were there, my sons and it was just great.

Setting the date.
As one of boys works away up north on a fly in fly out basis, we had to pick a date when he would be here.. so April 17th it was.. 3 months to set up a wedding. EASY... and so it was.
Both my parents are dead, as is Terry's dad.. one of the pitfalls of being older brides is that you dont have a lot of parental support or involvement.. but there were lots of other people to help. Friends, future daughters in law.. everyone pitched in.
We decided on a civil ceremony.. not because we didnt believe in God but because it suited us. We planned for a Sunday morning ceremony at a local park, followed by a lunchtime/ afternoon party at our house. And thats what we did.
Morning of the wedding
Terry & I stayed together the night before the wedding.. I know it wasn't traditional .. but what about this wedding was?? At 7.30 I got up and had a shower, had some breakfast and left with Nathan & Naomi ( his then girlfriend) to go to the Hairdressers. Steven did a wonderful job, using sparkle spray in my hair to give it a lift, Naomi & Shari ( Glenn's girlfriend) had their hair done, and although I wanted Shauna to be there too, she was bringing Cassie down at 11 am as her mom wouldnt let her come any earlier. Sometimes you just have to settle for what you can get..
After the hairdressers I went to Nathan's house to get dressed.. Naomi did my makeup and then the phone calls started.. " Terry can't find his bout.. where is it.." "
Terry is getting nervous, talk to him".. Poor thing.. for all that he is so tall and strong he is a real softie.. and I adore him.
The ceremony
We had a very simple ceremony. without a Bridal Party. My oldest son NATHAN, and Terrys oldest daughter SHAUNA, share the same birthdate, 18th May although Nathan is 7 years older than Shauna. We decided that they would be our witnesses as a way of joining the 2 families together.
Being an only child.. although by this time I was 50 I decided that I didnt want anyone to walk me down the path.(aisle). nor give me away.. I was giving myself to Terry and we decided that he would meet me halfway and walk down with me to the Lake where the ceremony was to be held, The celebrant worked this into the ceremony by saying " That as Terry walks to meet Sue, meeting her halfway they will move on into the future, together." I walked down to Shania Twain, " from this moment"
This is me, walking down towards the lake.. I look like I am running , but I'm not.. really.

The service was really short, and we had previously decided not to use a professional photographer.. I sort of regret this now, as our friends werent as good with the cameras as they all thought..
I wore a 3 piece suit of old gold lace.., The skirt was 2 layer chiffon, and I didnt end up wearing the jacket because it was such a warm day.. the shoes were champagne heels ( I needed all the Help I could get ,Terry is 6'2 and I am 5'2 )
In the photo, you can see the old gold lace on the top

I had a silk bouquet.. the three red roses are for yesterday, today and tomorrow.. or the past , the present and the future.. they symbolise that as a couple we had a past, a present and a future.. now in a pretty package.. During the signing of the register we had Ronan Keating's " when you say nothing at all".

The reception
From 1.30 onwards ( the wedding was at 12), we had the best party ever at
home.. with over 140 friends who have been with us at all stages of our
loves.. we provided finger foods, and beer, wine & soft drinks. We had it
catered, and people really enjoyed themselves.. so much so that at 10.30 I
said " that's it.. go home".. we were very lucky in that friends provided 2
wedding cakes for us..
A traditional fruit cake, made and soaked in Navy rum , and a chocolate
mud cake for Terry.

It was all very simple, because that's how we are.. nothing really too fancy.
just a celebration of a new stage in our lives.
Our patio is about 120 square metres.. its huge and we had people
everywhere.. we wandered around, talked , laughed and just enjoyed..
What more could you ask for on a wedding day..especially for 2nd timers
who thought love and life had passed them by, after their divorces.
This is our blended family,
Nathan 25, Glenn 21, Chris 23, Terry & I, His mother, Joan, Cassie 13, Shauna 18, and his brother Kim
