Scott proposed to me on December 17, 2004 and caught me completely by surprise! Here's the story as I wrote it a day or so after the event occurred.
Some background info
About six months before we started dating, Scott helped me get a job as a lab consultant on campus. I ended up getting hired a few months after we met and we started dating a few months after I got the job. We both recieved promotions within a few months of each other and we both became fairly well-known among the 150+ people who work with us.
I had three bosses; one worked in the building with me, one worked in a building a three minute walk away, and the other worked across campus. This is important!
The morning
I woke up late on Friday morning because I didn't have to go to work until noon that day. I looked online to see if Scott was on; he works from 8-5 Monday through Friday but he told me he wouldn't be on in the morning because he needed to install a new part into his work computer. I didn't see him on, and I occupied myself until I went to work at noon.
Work was boring, as I thought it would be; winter break started on campus so I spent the day finishing up the little work I had, conversing with the consultant on duty in the lab (I'm technically a supervisor for the consultants in the labs), and chatting on IM with some of my friends. I told them about how I expected my ring that evening when Scott arrived, excited and nervous about how he would do it.
Now, on to the good stuff, the proposal!
I recieved a phone call from my boss who works a few buildings away at around 2:15, asking if I could go and pick up a folder she dropped outside that she think she left in a specific area of campus between our two buildings. I said yes and I asked her another question and she stammered, so I wondered what was going on. I pulled on my coat and walked over to the area, searching around and not finding the folder. I began walking to my boss's building, until...
"Psst!" I hear someone say from the gazebo located right near where I stood! Scott and I had talked about this gazebo before, saying how romantic it would be to get married at midnight, just the two of us, under this little gazebo. Imagine my surprise when I walk over to the gazebo and see Scott waiting for me under the awnings! I knew something had to be up.
As I walk toward him, a look of confusion on my face, he says "Can I ask you a question?" and I say yes, a little in a daze. "Did you end up finding the folder?" he asks me with a grin, and I shake my head, of course! I then ask him when he got in town and how long he's been here, when he says to me again,
"Can I ask you another question?"
I nod, unable to speak, as he gets down on one knee (with a joking manner on his face; neither of us can ever be serious about anything!) and asks
"Will you marry me?"
with a grin on his face. Of course, I give him a hard time at first, jokingly saying 'no' but obviously I gave in and said "Oh, you know I'm kidding, of course I'll marry you!" and he fumbles in his pocket for the ring box and, hands shaking, puts the ring on my finger. It fits perfectly and I just spend a few minutes looking at it, and then he gathers me up for a big kiss right there under the gazebo. He also hands me a dozen roses he bought me for our anniversary, and I smile even harder. I'm engaged!
Afterthoughts
After we gathered our things from the gazebo, we walked to the building my boss works in and she gave us both a hearty 'congratulations'; she's the one that hired both of us so she was very happy to see us together! Apparently he had taken the day off work a few weeks in advance and told his parents, brother, co-workers, etc. that today was the big day! My sister had also weasled it out of him a few weeks prior to the engagement, but no one really knew any details.
As soon as he ended up in town yesterday morning he went to my boss's office and let her know his plans, and she got me out there so he could propose. I laughed when I heard the story and she gave us both many hugs. We told a few more coworkers when I made it back to my building, and I ended up leaving early (yay!) to spend the day with my FIANCE. (Double yay!)
Scott utterly and completely surprised me; I really expected it to happen in the evening, either while we were at our favorite restaurant or while we were sitting around my apartment. Instead, he set up something completely romantic and us, occuring during the day while I worked, giving us the entire evening to revel in our new status.
