View Full Version : I still can't see smileys.

Any new suggestions? I know there are a ton of new ones (I can see them from my work computer) and I would love to be able to see them from home.
I have tried everything I can think of :(
*Gina*
08-28-2006, 08:06 AM
You've already tried everything in the previous thread? I believe Lacie is away at the moment, and I don't have any new suggestions. If you have already tried everything from the other thread, I might suggest PM'ing Jimbo or JerandKathy in case they don't see this thread. Or I think Jimbo said there's an "Ask the Geeks" thread in the TechTalk.
Wish I were more help. :dunno:

I'm here, but I still don't have any clue what's going on. :(
Okay, I can't find the other thread, so I'm going to go through a list of questions:
What browser are you using?
Have you had any problems with any other websites and images?
Do you have any blockers installed? (Like for instance, I have a patch on my Firefox that doesn't allow javascript anywhere unless I allow it, many times I've felt like a complete idiot because I couldn't figure out why a page wasn't working correctly, only to realize I hadn't allowed it yet)
Do you see anything in place of the smileys?
Could you do a print screen and post it so we can see what you are seeing?
theAmericanNtheSwede

thanks so much for trying to help
ok, here are the answers:
What browser are you using? both Firefox and IE
Have you had any problems with any other websites and images? nope.
Do you have any blockers installed? (Like for instance, I have a patch on my Firefox that doesn't allow javascript anywhere unless I allow it, many times I've felt like a complete idiot because I couldn't figure out why a page wasn't working correctly, only to realize I hadn't allowed it yet) only popups
Do you see anything in place of the smileys? red Xs.
Could you do a print screen and post it so we can see what you are seeing?http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d82/jenniferpatrik/screen.jpg
that's weird, not only are you not seeing smileys, but you also can't see any of the board images.
Is that how it works in Firefox also? and it's not like that at work? I would try clearing out your cache, and check all your preferences, both in your internet options and your board options.
theAmericanNtheSwede
08-28-2006, 03:34 PM
in firefox it doesn't have the Xs. it just doesn't have those links at all.
i have cleared cache many times and checked my internet options. i can't figure out what i need to chnage! it worked without a problem until we switched servers (i think that's what happened a month or 2 back).
and at work it looks 100% normal, so i know it's something on the computer rather than my account settings.
JerAndKathy
08-28-2006, 03:38 PM
Mentioned in another thread, you might try this...
Also as Gina brought up you should clear your cache from time to time since it doesn't always update properly and then you always have the latest info from your ISP. Best way to do this is open the command prompt. Then type in "ipconfig /flushdns". You should get back a message that the fluch was successful and then just close the command prompt. :)
Since it started during the server move...That may be the problem.
theAmericanNtheSwede
08-28-2006, 03:44 PM
nothing :( i tried that one last time too.
What type of connection are you on?
Jimbo
08-28-2006, 08:06 PM
I am going to have to go with Kari on this one. With out knowing the answer yet I am going to guess that you are working on a dial up connection. That being the case you are going to have to put up with that stuff most likely because the connection to the server is just simply timing out before you can get all of the information downloaded. That would be my guess since some images are showing up but others aren't.
Course it would be a completely different problem if you are running on a broadband connection.
Also there isn't an ask the Geek thread up and running yet but I wouldn't mind answer questions in there for the whole community. Maybe if we start a thread in the Techtalk section and then make it a sticky so that it doesn't get burried if there aren't any questions for a while. Assuming that is ok with management/mods of that section!:kimgrill:
That is exactly what I was thinking Jimbo (dial up)
(and I think your thread suggestion is a GREAT idea!!)
*Gina*
08-28-2006, 10:07 PM
I (selfishly) did not think that there were others still using dial-up, and if this is your case, I'm soooo sorry.
Is it possible that the smiley list is timing out due to the insane amount I have in there? :shuffle: I don't know much about these sorts of problems, so I may be way off base.
*Gina*
08-28-2006, 10:16 PM
Isn't there a way to turn images off here so that loading a page goes faster? Or was that just UW? I thought it was standard with vBulletin.
Jimbo
08-28-2006, 10:28 PM
The turning images off is part of your browser settings. However my understanding is the pages will load quicker but then instead of missing smilies and a few other things she would be missing the stuff in people signature and the like Jaci avatar in that picture.
The smiley list doesn't have anything to do with it unless they actually tried to open the whole smiley list and see all that there is. vBulletin and other forum software just wasn't designed to work on Dial up. If she is on dial up and that then I would have to say that is what is causing the problem and unfortunetly she may just be SOL. I know it sucks but on dial really limits what you can do anymore on the net.

I can't disagree with you more. If the forum software has been written well and optimized (as vB and many others have), then all of the 'weight' of the pages is dealt with on the server...Querying the DB assembling the pages, etc...And if you leave it at the default 10 posts/page, then the pages should still be reasonably sized for dial-up users. Trust me, I was one up until a year ago and had no problems whatsoever on any forum.
Additionally, if any images were going to time-out while loading the page, it would be those hosted off-site such as the tickers, etc. Not those images which are on-site and readily available to the forum software.

PHEW. I feel better about that. :)
Jimbo
08-28-2006, 10:55 PM
While you bring up good point Jer that isn't always the case. I know that forum software is supposed to be optmized to work on any speed connection. The truth of the matter for boards that get this much traffice that just isn't true. Try loading them up on a dial up system sometime and you will see what I mean.
Also as far as the off site images are concerned it can vary. Some of the problem could also be that the ISP of teh user we are talking about has a problem talking to the server that the boards are one which will make the pages load slowly and from time to time the smiley's to be missing. Where as they may not have a problem with the servers hosting the ticker stuff for signatures and stuff.
There are many different things that could be causing this we just don't know about, but as much information that we have right now a dial up connection is still the most logical problem. Especially when I have seen this exact same thing happen back on the UW boards one time when I tried to get on using a dial up connection.

That is reall wierd because then the next thing I would get is there is something wrong with the folder permissions, although I believe that Lacie checked it out and that didn't seem to be the case. Plus if that was the problem I would think that you shouldn't be able to see avatars either.
The only other thing that I can come up with is that maybe your ISP blocks certain things from the hosting company that the boards are on. Which would explain why the problem poped up around the time of the server change.
theAmericanNtheSwede

very very strange. and sad :(
Lacie

Yep, folder permissions have been checked. I'm seriously stumped as to what's going on. :( I posted on vbulletin.org, and none of them have any idea other than what's already been tried, either.

Let's explore this. Try going to www.hostgator.com and browse around a bit. See if there's any problems there. Also try www.fbrandbaby.com and www.driscolfamily.com. Let me know if you have any problems viewing those sites (view them in IE so you can see where the images are broken, if any are).

Are those sites that you manage with the same hosting company?
Yep. Well, HostGator is the company. The others are my personal sites, which are hosted there, and MLW is hosted there as well.
So since you can see everything fine at those three, it seems that your ISP doesn't have a problem with the hosting provider. Which puts us back at square one. :sigh:
Do you have firewall software on your computer? If so, have you tried disabling it?
Jimbo
08-29-2006, 03:09 PM
Nice thought I don't know why I wasn't even thinking about a firewall. Also back before you said that you had a POP blocker to you know the name of that software or is it like a plug-in inside of your broswer?

Okayyyyyyyyy........so why can't I see ALL of the smiley's then? And I have to disagree with the dial up theory, becuase I am on dial up, and have NO problems with ANY other site....it isn't my firewall either...I turned it off and still they dont show....I have emptied my cache, and still nothing.....this is the only site I have a problem with.....I have browsed through other vb message boards as well.....STILL no problem EXCEPT with MLW.
Alissa, go to usercp and look for the option to turn off the viewing of signatures. It could be that because we use SO MANY smilies you are timing out. By turning off siggies, you are eliminating much of the stuff that needs to load. Yes, I know other boards use smilies, but I really think that many of us use WAY more than the average person especially now with the Siggy Fairy game in progress
(It is a theory, so just humor me)
For example, I have almost 30 images in my siggy right now. That is A LOT!
Julie

Hmm... I've looked for that, but the only thing I can do is add allowable applications from my computer. It's a Norton Firewall, and I've turned it off completely and the smileys work so I know it's the settings. I just am not wanting to have it off all the time.

Do you go to other message boards such as this? Just because they it works find on other sites doesn't mean that you the dial up part isn't the causing the problem you are having. I have seen it happen with one computer when I was working for an ISP. Once we hooked the same computer up tp a high speed connection it started to work perfectly.
Also which firewall are you using? Just because you turn it off doesn't mean the problem will go a way. For instance I know for a fact because I have had to deal with it many times before that if you just turn off McAfee firewall it doesn't make a difference. They one way to check it with out the firewall it to uninstall it and see if it works. Then it does you know that was the problem. I know I have heard of a few other firewalls being the same way but I can't remember the names of them off the top of my head right now.

Jimbo, yes, I have been to other message boards like this one, with smilies and all, and they work just fine, I do sometimes have a problem with the connection timing out before ALL graphics are displayed, but a refresh always works and the graphics that weren't displayed before show up after refreshing the page. Not so with MLW.......
My firewall is Norton internet security, and my OS is windows XP....
JerAndKathy
09-03-2006, 11:40 AM
After shutting down the firewall, go into Control Panel >> Security Center and see if it says the firewall is actually shut down. Because...A number of the "famous" firewalls won't shut down when you tell them too.
Jimbo
09-04-2006, 11:47 AM
Norton Firewall is one of the ones that doesn't always shut down when you tell it to shut down. Usually the only real way to test if that is the problem or not is to uninstall it.
The other messages boards that you go to are they using the same software meaning vBulletin or are they running something else?

I can't figure out how to change the settings on the firewall so the site will work, but still be able to use the firewall. That is one of the things that I don't like about Norton. They have become one of the least user friendly programs around. Couldn't even begin to tell you where the settings are because I just don't trust Norton. Wouldn't even touch it with a 10 foot poll.

If anyone is looking for a top notch, easy to use, it does what you tell it to firewall...Check out Computer Associates - their eTrust ez Firewall (http://www3.ca.com/solutions/Product.aspx?ID=162) rawks. It seems to be showing up consistantly....however, it sems the more I surf THIS site....the more that show up....but if I leave this site for any amount of time....it goes back to just showing a few....
I have tried changing my firewall settings, it hasn't made much of a differance...

OOOPSIE! I take that back...it isn't neccessarily my FIREWALL, but it is related to a privacy protection setting located in the internet security.....which isn't the firewall, but an additional feature.....which is why nothing was happening when I turned off just the firewall.....

In your browser? Or your Firewall? Where is this "extra feature"?
*alissa*

It is in my NORTON INTERNET SECURITY.....which contains port stealthing (i.e. security), intrusion detection, firewall, privacy control, ad blocking, antispam, parental control, and antivirus....all in one.
I added MLW to the list of sites within privacy control, and allowed everything from MLW, but when I turned that particualr feature back on....the smilies stopped showing up consistantly...

Maybe, but one of the reasons I think it's a crappy software suite is the problem you're having. It won't do (or allow to you do) what you want. And I won't even get into when you want to uninstall it - it'll take a phone call to Norton in order to it completely, 100% uninstalled.

Even then you usually don't get rid of it all. Only true way to get rid of it it so format the HDD. Which reminds me about time to do that again. :happysigh:

Have also heard of people with a week subscription left, calling them to uninstall and they won't help until they renew. Even tho they have a week of sub time left!

I don't think it is a mtter of NOT allowing me to do it.....it is more of a matter of I don't know HOW to do it....it has always been 99% maintenace free....it runs on it's own, updates on it's own....I have never had to mess with it at all.....
and as far uninstallation goes....I have sucessfully uninstalled it completely on my own, with no problems. NOW AOL or EARTHLINK.....ha ha, have fun completely uninstalling those! :)

If you just uninstalled it and then it wasn't showing up in your programs anymore it was still there in bit and pieces all over your computer just where you can't see it. That is what Jer and I are talking about. Almost impossible to get rid of all of it. Which is one of the big reasons I will never go back to them. I don't trust any software company that gets that deep into my system that I have to format my hard drive to get rid of it all.

Well I'm still having this problem. I can't see any images hosted by MLW - not the buttons in the writing a post form, not the title image at the top of the page, no smilies. I can see avatars. I have cleared the cache, heck I even uninstalled Firefox and re-installed it. I can see everything fine on my laptop, but not on my desktop (same net connection, using a router. Firefox on both computers. No firewall on either computer. Don't have a problem with any other site or forum out there, even those using the exact same forum software. :( I'm stumped and this sucks.

I right-clicked on the banner at the top left of the forum and clicked "View Image". This is what it says: "You do not have permission to access this page." If I type in the URL itself (http://www.mustloveweddings.com/forums/images/mlwlogo.png), even after closing and re-opening Firefox, same thing. Won't let me view the image.
Edit: I just checked my virus scanner, in case it was interfering. I disabled it, closed Firefox and re-opened it, went to MLW... still no images.

Have you tried using another browser on your desktop to see if it changes anything?
If this were a problem within MLW, we'd all be experiencing the problem. Since it's not, it's most likely something within your desktop or Firefox (despite having uninstalled and reinstalled it).

ARrggggg, you're right, I can see images in IE. I agree, it's definitely Firefox..... but I sure as heck can't figure out what's wrong.
Try going to Tools > Options > Content and see if you have a checkmark in front of "load images automatically" and make sure that MLW wasn't accidentally added as an exception. (button to the right)

Nothing listed as exceptions. :(
I will do some more checking when I get home. (don't have firefox at work)
