I'm not sure if I'm going to wear one yet or not because my dress is already pretty poofy, but have any of y'all? If so, who did it or is doing it? Do you have pictures?

I was thinking of dying mine pink if I get one, but I'm not sure.

Thoughts? Pictures?

When I first got engaged, I was seriously considering dying the crinoline I bought (it was going to be my "something blue").

I found a company in the UK where you can actually buy a crinoline in any color. I can't seem to locate the site. If I find it, I'll let you know.

I think it's fun in pictures!

I'm pretty sure I'm going to die mine, but I heard somewhere that the color can bleed into your dress and possibly ruin it? anyone else heard of that?
I still think I'm going to do it though, not like I plan to wear the dress again.

I'm doing mine black with rit dye.

I think most people wash them again after they dye it to prevent bleeding, but I could be wrong. That is what I plan on doing.

*Gina*

I imagine it could do that if you dye it right before you wear it. You also should wash it through a full cycle after you dye it to avoid that happening. I dyed mine about a month before the wedding and washed it afterwards and I never had any problems. :)

I've wanted to dye my crinoline for as long as I can remember! Cobalt or royal blue for me. Rit dye will be easy to use for this!

I'm doing mine black with rit dye.

You do realize that Rit probably won't make it a true black, right?

But... you can get most styles of crinoline in white or black, no dying necessary! I'm planning on buying a black crinoline to go under my orange wedding dress. :}

Yep, I just want to get it as dark as I can.
It is from one of my proms and I don't want to have to buy another one. :)

Hehe that's a funny title; I took out my crinoline to air it today and it's well and alive.

About changing its color, I thought briefly about dyeing it blue, but I really don't want the crinoline to steal the thunder from the gown, so it'll stay white. Plus we're adding a lot of netting on it and I'm not too sure how that would work out with dye.

I dyed mine on Tuesday !!

I washed it in Dye according to instructions then ran thru a rinse cycle by itself. Then washed and did an extra rinse. It came out clear water with the extra rinse so I knew it was Okay.

I dyed mine SCARLETT RED..but only the fabric (waist) actually turned RED..the rest is PINK.. Kinda disappointed, but it will still be cool to wear under my dress :)

I need to try to find a way to take pictures..Just don't have any way of hanging it up to get a proper picture. Its laying in the floor of our spare bedroom (door closed so kittens can't get in there).

Will try to get a bottle of dye in the meantime and try again then. James has to work so I have time to concentrate on the dying process :)

Last week I dyed my slip..Didn't quite turn out RED .. Upon the suggestion of someone here..I am going to dye it AGAIN..

Its more PINK than red in majority of the slip. Only the waist actually turned red.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v519/rmendaann/Wedding/DyedSlip.jpg

I will try again on Tues or Wednesday when I have the house to myself again.

Gotta show James the pictures of my slip idea..somehow he thinks i am going to lift my dress and show EVERYTHING ;) He thinks i will be embrassing him so I gotta show him pictures that it will be in good taste :) I wouldn't do anything to purposely embrass either of us on our wedding day.

If you go to Ritdye.com, there is a list that tells you what color to get if you are going over another color. That's what helped me get mine to the pink I wanted. Let me see if I can link you....

Okay, go here:

http://www.ritdye.com/craft_faq.asp#fabrics

Go to the question that says: (It's almost at the bottom of the page)

Can colored fabrics be dyed?

And click on the link that says:

Covering Colors

There will be a small pop up window that tells you which Rit dye to get to cover up the color you have now.

I dyed mine RED..but it turned out PINK..i bought the same shade of red and going to attempt to dye it again.

I am going to let it soak longer this time... I followed Rit Directions last time but the red dye didn't make everything red..

Okay I wasn't going to wear a slip because I don't think I need it under my dress, but once I try it on again in the RIGHT size I'll see how I feel. If I do, I'm DEFINITELY dying it. Either pink or green -- probably pink to match my roses...

I love it!

Gina -- did you have any problems with your skin being pink after the wedding? Also, how many times did you wash it so that it didn't bleed? I don't want to sweat from dancing and have the color run all over me! More importantly, all over my GORGEOUS wedding dress!

(And random, but everytime Michael says "you're going to my wife" or "come give me a kiss my beautiful future wife" I get that squishy feeling. He gets me with the "Future Mrs. L" everytime, oye.

My all-cotton hot pink petticoat gave me 2 full days of pink legs. I didn't dye it myself, it was store-bought, and afterwards I washed it at home (handwashed in cold water with vinegar) and it turned everything pink. I also had a blue, a red and a green slip and nothing happened with them, though.

I washed my slip until the water ran clear.. I will wash it again before I go back to my next dress fitting just to be sure.

I think the colored crinolines are absolutely adorable!!!!!!

However - I would STRONGLY suggest just buying one made in the right color and not having to worry about die running on your dress. You may not plan to wear it again, but if you later decide to pass it on to a daughter or goddaughter, you may regret that it has green dye on it. Just a thought. :)

I fell in love with this the first time I saw it! If my dress needed a crinoline, I was going to do orange, and now that my dress does require it, I can!! My dress is light gold, so I'm going to dye it dark red like my flowers...who knows how many times I'll have to dye it to get it that color? Oh well...I'm committed.

If anybody wants to dye their own crinoline using Rit, then here are a few tips:

Use *at least* twice as much dye as Rit recommends. The darker the end colour is meant to be & the larger the crinoline is, the more dye you'll need.

Dye takes much better to natural fabrics than it does synthetics. I honestly don't know if any crinolines out there are cotton blends, but if you're planning on dying yours, this might be something to research...

Rit works a lot better in a pot on the stove, but I imagine it would be difficult to find a pot large enough to dye a wedding-dress sized crinoline...

So, turn off the "cold" water in your washing machine, & fill the thing up w/ hot water. Add your dye, plus a cup of salt. Let the water slosh around a bit to mix. If you're using powdered Rit rather than the liquid, you'll want to dissolve the powder & the salt in a pot of hot water on the stove before you add it to the wash.

Thoroughly wet the crinoline under the sink or shower (this will help ensure that the dye takes to it evenly), then add it to the wash.

Keep an eye on the washer... before it starts draining water before rinsing, turn the knob back around to the beginning of the wash cycle. The more you do this, the better the results will be. You want your crinoline to be in there for *at least* an hour.

Once you actually want to rinse your crinoline, you'll probably have to remember to turn the cold water back on to the washer (at least, if you have a washer like mine, that only rinses w/ cold).

When you're done dying your crinoline, wash it at least once. Wash it in hot water, & throw in a cup of white vinegar. This should help set the colour.

Honestly, though, if you've got a certain shade in mind that you want your crinoline to be, you're probably much better off either finding a crinoline for sale in that colour, or researching commercial fabric dyes. Don't get me wrong: I love Rit, & I use it a lot... but I use Rit the way I use hair dye: I don't much care what the final result is, as long as it looks different from the original. ;D

Like I said earlier in this thread: I want to wear a black crinoline w/ my wedding gown, so I'm planning on buying a black crinoline. ^_^

I dyed mine once and I want it to be at least one shade darker of Red so I will try it again.

Hmmmm. A good friend of mine offered to send me her crinoline. Maybe I'll dye it (she does NOT want it back ;) ), otherwise I'll probably just rent one from the bridal shop I'm buying my gown.

Gina, yours looks AMAZING!!!

I've wanted a pink crinoline for the longest time! But - I have a front loading washer .... so I'm thinking it probably would be a bad idea to dye it myself ... does anyone know where I can buy an already pink one? :)

It took me TWO tries to get my slip dyed the color I wanted..

If you don't want to mess with dying one..there is some colored slips on ebay. Otherwise I don't know where else to buy them.

Gina -- did you have any problems with your skin being pink after the wedding? Also, how many times did you wash it so that it didn't bleed?

I'm sorry, I just saw this post.

After the initial dying, I washed it once more, by itself, with laundry detergent. It did take some of the harshness out (but not enough to make a huge difference) and I had *no* issues with the dye transferring to my skin or gown.

Ummm so quick question for those who have already dyed and worn their crinoline, especially those with a darker color...

Did anyone have a problem with the color showing through their dress at all ???

I am already now in the process of dying my crinoline, and it's going to be dark, which is what I wanted....I will find out on Sunday how it works with the dress, but if it shows through I am SCREWED!

Have you been able to dry (hang out to dry) the crin yet? I was going to suggest a picture here of the dried crin...

Most likely, it won't show through your dress ...

What is your dress made out of ? does it have some built in layers of crinoline already in it?

Sk8ermaiden
07-15-2007, 08:49 PM
I dyed mine. It didn't turn out crimson like I had hoped (crinolines from Angel's bridal on Ebay are polyester which doesn't take dye well), but it did turn out a very dark magenta.

My dress is a normal thickness satin, and it doesn't show through. :)

Weddingplans
07-15-2007, 10:47 PM
hmmm okay...Sk8ermaiden that makes me feel a bit better. :kimgrill:

I'm not sure what the underlay of my dress is, if it is satin or what, but it has organza overlay on top of it...I don't think it has an attatched crinoline, but I'm thinking it's thicker than just a piece of fabric too.

I took the crin out to dry on top of a drying rack, and then mom moved it into her room, so I can't take a picture of it right now, completely dry, but tomorrow I can.

I think I'll be okay though...we will see. Thanks ladies! :)

Athough, now that I think about it...my color's Apple. I'm wondering if I should dye it again, to try and get it darker...hmmmm.
