In the summer of 2004 we were looking at me having one more year of college left before everything was up in the air. Because I was from Canada (and him in the US), once I graduated I probably was not going to be allowed back in the US except for very short visits. (The only reason they used to let me across for the entire summer was because I had another semester of college looming ahead of me so they knew I'd be back.) Plus Den and I pretty much *knew* we were going to get married once I graduated, but it just wasn't official and he'd refuse to talk about it because we weren't engaged. To be honest, it drove me INSANE.

So I told him: you have until I leave for home at the end of the summer. If you don't "officially" propose by then I'm doing it for you. During the summer, after another month of no proposal, I'd get upset and start crying - it was totally irrational, but sometimes it felt like he'd never propose and I'd never be able to move here!

He waited until the very last weekend - labor day weekend. It happened to be a weekend we were on vacation with a bunch of good friends, and it also happened to be my birthday.

Here's my entry in my journal from the day I got home after that weekend:

* * * * *

At quarter to 10pm, Friday, September 3rd, Denis proposed. I said yes.

The 3rd was also my birthday, as well as the day we flew to Atlanta for the conference. Den was being extremely sweet. I just got a feel that something was up, but it could have just been because it was my birthday and a real vacation for us. Either way, I greatly enjoyed it. He’d kiss me frequently, and, most telling, just stare at me with a loving smile stuck on his face.

Wendy was trying to decide what to get me for my birthday. We went shopping at the dealer’s tables together, me pointing out things I liked. She later conferred with Den to decide on a present and brought the item-in-bag along to dinner.

Dinner was at a restaurant with all our friends. It had been a planned dinner for weeks, a rather expensive pre-paid dinner. But it was very good food, and great company. We all talked and laughed and took a picture of the ying-yang-in-the-beer.

Near 10:00, it was observed that the restaurant would be kicking us out soon. Wendy said something to Den about “going to get it now,” and went running out of the room. My first thought was that she’d left my present downstairs. But she went the wrong way out the room and came back a few minutes later empty-handed. I shrugged it off, as she grabbed my present from behind us and let me open it.

I pulled out two champagne glasses, ones I had indeed mentioned I liked. But still, it was an odd choice - I had pointed out plenty of things. Just then a waiter stepped up behind us and popped a bottle of champagne, pouring it into my two new glasses. As I reached for mine, Den took my hand in his. My heart fluttered.

“Natalie,” he said, “I love you.”

I kissed him and said I loved him too. I knew - I just knew - he wasn’t done talking yet, but I couldn’t think, couldn’t sit still. I wanted to touch him, kiss him.

He held my face in his hands after the kiss. “Will you marry me?”

Without hesitation I said yes and we kissed.

Then everyone cheered and rushed in to hug us with congratulations. Shea, of course, called out, “It’s about time!”
