Has anyone else from NC made the great migration???? :)
*meghan*
07-14-2006, 04:05 PM
Ok, so no NC girls so far....but I'll kick things off anyways :)
I'm Meghan from Greensboro, and I'm getting married at Magnolia Manor (http://www.magnolia-manor.com) on 10.28.06! :)

I'm from NC. Shallotte to be exact. We are on the coast right between Wilmington, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC. We are getting married at the Silver Coast Winery.

I just moved back to WI from Raleigh and I miss it SO much!! Just coming in to get my NC fix ;)
*meghan*
07-17-2006, 06:21 PM
Hey girls! :wavey:
Lisa, I'm so jealous that you are getting married at a winery! That is going to be beautiful!
Hi Mandy! Any plans to come back to NC soon? :)
carolinalady67
07-17-2006, 06:32 PM
Hi Mandy. I use to like to check out the Iowa boards because that is where I'm from.
I was so happy I decided to check out the winery. And if it hadn't been for joining UW and seeing others talk about having their weddings at a winery I never would have gone out there.

Hey Jenn! My FH's parents live in Charlotte, so we are there quite a bit :)
Lisa - I saw that there is a tropical depression off the coast. Any news of whether it might come your way?
carolinalady67
07-18-2006, 08:49 PM
I missed the news tonight so not sure what the tropical depression is doing now. Last night they said it wouldn't effect us much if at all. I think they were more worried about north of us.
*meghan*
07-20-2006, 02:30 PM
Yay, no tropical storms for us! :) Let's hope they all stay out to sea this year :)
Mandy
07-20-2006, 03:23 PM
Yay for NC! Man, I miss it so much. I'm sure I'll be going out there soon since my mom is still out there, but as for right now, we're stuck out here in Badger Country. I miss a lot of stuff from Raleigh. :(
*meghan*
07-20-2006, 04:36 PM
Have you been to Raleigh lately? My MOH just moved there from NY, and WOW!!!! I can't believe how much it's grown in the past 2 years, and I'm never there unless I'm traveling through. Greensboro and Charlotte are growing quickly too, it's unreal.
Mandy
07-20-2006, 05:37 PM
Yeah--Raleigh is quite the bussling metropolis!! Traffic there is UNREAL!
*meghan*
07-20-2006, 05:57 PM
No kidding, that's EXACTLY why we don't live there  Greensboro traffic is fine with us!
carolinalady67
07-20-2006, 06:30 PM
All of NC must be growing then because it is unbelievable the changes in our small costal town in the six years I've lived here.

Anyone from the Asheville area or been there?
We are taking two honeymoons. A cruise later in the year but in May right after the wedding we are thinking of going over to Asheville for a few days. Any tips on places to stay?

I'm just trying to stay indoors! I haven't thought much about the weekend yet. Chris goes to the VA tomorrow for a biopsy on his prostate. So I've been stressed about that.
Kelly
08-08-2006, 12:11 PM
staying inside.. DH is in orientation for his new job, , I work Saturday so most likely Sunday will be wash clothes for next week and rest, thank goodness it's not time to mow our yard yet;)
*meghan*
08-08-2006, 03:15 PM
Lisa, I hope everything's ok with Chris!
Good idea about staying inside, Kelly! It's not a problem for me either since I have to work everyday through Sunday, yuck :(

I'm not officially a NC girl, I'm from Michigan, but I did live in Rocky Mount for about 4-5 years right out of high school, and attended NC Wesleyan for awhile. My mom and her husband are still there, and it truly is like a second home for me.
My avatar is a photo of me and FH on the rocks of the Tar River. The river is so low lately, you can walk right across it in many spots.

Hi to the "new" girls. Nice to have everone finding MLW! :)
We booked a caterer yesterday! Now I just have the DJ and baker left as far as vendors go. Then just need a few little things, like a dress!
We did get good news on Chris. He just has an infection. Which may not sound like good news but it is MUCH better then prostate cancer. One less thing to worry about and can now focus on the wedding.
*meghan*
08-18-2006, 11:33 AM
Hey again Tanya! Hi Lizaanne! :)
Lisa, that is great news about Chris! Well, infections are no fun, but easily treatable :) Yay for getting things booked! Have you started dress shopping yet?
carolinalady67
08-18-2006, 11:40 AM
no dress shopping yet. I was hoping to lose a little weight before I went and put any dresses on. But I found one on David's site the other night that I am in love with! http://www.davidsbridal.com/bridal_gowns_detail.jsp?stid=2056&prodgroup=129 so am at least excited to go and look now. I think I'll schedule something for next month. And at least find out when I have to order it by.

The cool fall weather is here!! I ordered a new jacket and it arrived on the doorstep the very first morning it got cool (last week?) and I've worn it almost every day. Have to defrost the car in the morning too! Hugo thinks from the evening chill that it might be a cold winter- what do you think?
My girlfriend that I grew up with in this area, who now works at the same school I work at, is getting engaged!!! I have mentioned this website to her. Hopefully we will see her on here soon!!
Meanwhile, do any of you know of any outdoor ceremony/reception sites here near the north/center of the state? Triad or Triangle or thereabouts? She is looking for a place, but her dream site charges $3K for the ceremony and another $3K for the reception... just the rental fees! I am sure the catering is high b/c their restaurant is $55/meal!
We have already looked at these:
Fearrington Village (that is the ideal/expensive one!)
Castle McCulloch
Heritage Hill
Burke Manor Inn
Bryan Park
Magnolia Manor
and I'm sure there were a couple more that I forgot. She is looking for something rustic, outdoors (a sort of farm feel more than an estate/castle), in the area and not too expensive!! Let me know if there are others you know about and I will pass them on to her!!

I hope it isn't a cold winter! It is just hard to believe that tomorrow is October. Last night was the coldest night for us so far got down to 51.
Congrats to your friend Amanda. I'm not much help for that area. Hope she finds something she likes for a lower price. That is a lot of money just for rental.

Childress Winery looks GORGEOUS, but it might be just as expensive. The barn is in Tanglewood Park in Forsyth County. I have a friend interested in that.

Hiya ladies! Just checking in to make sure everyone is alright. My mom called and told me about the explosion in Apex today! Eeek! She's in Durham now, but I like to be sure. I really miss Raleigh though :( FH and I were talking about that today. We used to love going to hang out and just walk around the malls there...they're so big! I even miss the traffic on Capitol Blvd!! *sigh*

I SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO wanted to get married at Childress Vineyards, but since so many guests are OOT, we didn't want them stuck in Lexington with nothing to do. It's sooooooooooooooo beautiful, and I know they are building a lot of neat shops right next door (or they may be finished). :)

Thanks for the suggestions for Childress Vineyards and Tanglewood!! :)
I have heard Childress is beautiful, and of course I love wine so it sounds great, but Hugo's best man and his wife went there the other week and they said the service and food were terrible!! Wonder if it always is or it was just that day?? Anyway they said they are NEVER going back there and they are from Lexington too!
I am still gonna pass those on to JJ (my friend) though! Also, this week I heard of a newish place called the Hayloft in McCleansville. She is gonna try and call- they don't have a website, but it's advertised as a rustic barn that holds up to 250... we will see how it is!!

so i have a question in the winter how cold does it get there?
lizaanne
11-02-2006, 09:27 AM
It really depends because the state runs from the coast to the mountains, so it really does vary. My mom lives in Rocky Mount, which is between the coast and Raleigh, and it never gets as cold as it does in Michigan, but there will be some days that hit the 30's, but only briefly. And winter in NC only lasts about a month and a half, then spring starts up pretty early - again, depending on where you are in the state.
Sorry - that wasn't much of an answer. :-P
~Liza
carolinalady67
11-02-2006, 02:30 PM
I agree with Liza, we are way down in the South East part of the state and we have much nicer winters then other parts of the state. It may get into the 30's or even for a few weeks the 20's at night but during the day it will be in the 40's but normally 50's. I didn't even use a coat at all last winter. A sweetshirt was always enough for me. The locals my wear a coat, but being from the midwest, that is not winter coat weather to me :)
Kelly
11-02-2006, 06:50 PM
well, here it goes, the mountains usually are a lot colder and aquire a lot more snow than the rest of the state. the beach is much warmer in winter but can still get incredibly nippy-20's-40s. and the area in between gets a mix-ice, sleet, snow, weather in the teens and twentys. but end of november to end of january is usually the coldest but we have been know to get snow in early march..lol

I've never been to Asheville, but we are going close to there (well, kinda close) this weekend to Western Carolina Univ. We are staying at the Balsam Mountain Inn - it's a bed and breakfast about 45 minutes from Asheville. That's probably too far, huh? Ok, I'm no help

I just booked at trip for December and we're staying there, too! I looked up reviews on Trip Advisor. Some were bitchy (there are always a few of those), but some were really positive. It's not five-star quality, but I love the rustic look of it, especially since we're going in December. I've always wanted to see the Biltmore all decked out for Christmas.

The Biltmore is really cool. My DH isn't really a huge history buff, but the house and grounds are amazing. If you go during the slow season, January-March, tickets are less expensive and so are the hotels. Asheville is a cool place for a weekend getaway. Maybe I'll bug him at dinner tomorrow. ;)

Any ideas for a Raleigh/Cary/Apex reception location? I've just barely started planning we're thinking about 50 people. Also, we're thinking about doing both the ceremony and reception at a restaurant. Has anyone done this? How did it workout?

Hi Liz. I'm not in the Raleigh area so can't really help you but I'm sure some of the other girls can. Just wanted to say hi and wish you luck in your planning.
And yes a ceremony and reception at a restaurant can work if they have the right set up for it. We looked at one here that had a seperate room for it. So just look around and make sure you would have a nice private area at least for the ceremony.

I found the link I was telling you about earlier, Liz- Triangle Bridal Association. It lists sites and vendors who are basically on a "good" list. They have to keep up to a certain standard to be included. Maybe when you have time you can look through this page and see if you find any neat sites, etc.

Hey girls! I thought it would be fun to do a signature wedding with a theme of "Carolina Panthers". Not going over the top football with it, but using the blue/black colors.
