As I plan on sending my invitations out after the first of the year, I inquired about expected increases in postage during my visit to the Post Office Monday. I was told that they will go up to $0.42 in May or June. I hope this tidbit of info is able to help someone!

Also keep in mind, if you send out your invitations before the new rate but your RSVP cards are due after the increase you'll need more postage on your RSVP cards. Just something to complicate things more ;)

Heather, I am not sure, but I would think it will be another across the board increase.

They are saying this one is because of the gas prices. And it hasn't been approved yet, that I have heard. They have just requested another increase. I didn't hear the report but Chris said they were told this was it, they needed to get in their request that would last for a while and not go through this every year.

They're doing it in May, last I heard. Part of the reason it goes up so often is because there's some rule that the post office isn't supposed to make a profit from postage, just break even, but that means that rather than raising postage like 4 cents and having it last two years, they have to raise it 3 cents this year and 1 cent next year.

Also keep in mind, if you send out your invitations before the new rate but your RSVP cards are due after the increase you'll need more postage on your RSVP cards. Just something to complicate things more ;)
Good thing to keep in mind!! :aok:

Good thinking! I had thought about the burden of paying more to send the invitation itself, but the RSVP never crossed my mind. Oh, the joys of capitalism. :floating:

The Canadian postage is going up also in the new year. Not untill Jan 15. But I thought it would be great to let all the Canadians know also.
I have already bought my one cent stamps for the rsvp cards.

Remember when postal workers walked? Not that I'm saying they should or anything because that would be icky....but I remember as a kid waiting for my mailman, Mr. Dixon. What a nice old guy.
NOW it varies between a couple of them, one parks the truck and walks the block. The other seems annoyed that she has to actually deliver the mail because it interferes with her talking on her CELL PHONE. Not kidding, she's always on it -- I can see her and hear her with it. Heaven forbid if I have something delivered in a box......

Yes..I remember being pretty upset because it added quite a bit onto the cost of postage for my invites and rsvps.

AGAIN??!!!
I'm thinking of ordering some speciality stamps, but I will definitely wait awhile longer until we know more about the rate increase. We just ordered our invites so I won't worry about stamps until they come in.

FYI from a business newsletter I get: There is only a slight chance that the pending rate case set to be implemented by the U.S. Postal Service on May 6 could be delayed, and then only by one week, according to Gene Del Polito, president of the Association for Postal Commerce.
So the new rates should be revealed in May.
