I am always amazed at how incredibly beautiful handmade invitations turn out. Are they difficult? What is the hardest part *besides choosing the invitation, duh!* ?

Aubrey and Jennifer....your invites are my absolulte favorites! They are both so cool!

Our invites were a kit that I purchased from Michael's and printed the vellum overlay (3 times now!). I knid of wish I would have spent the money and ordered the ones I really wanted from a company, but that would have cost about $200 more....but I am really pleased with how my invites turned out given I printed them myself and they were super cheap!

I would love to see those directions! Can you share?

SmilingHoney
07-26-2006, 02:38 PM
Hi Diane, I don't mind sharing at all. That's what we're all here for!

Here's the link to the website w/ the templates
http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/cr_scrapbooking/article/0,2025,DIY_13776_4417259,00.html

The outer parts are made w/ scrapbooking paper. The invite card and RSVP cards were from a kit I bought from Hobby Lobby when they were having a 75% off sale. The scrapbooking paper was bought at Michael's when they were having their 12x12 paper on sale for 4 / $1.00.

3 Kits @ 5.00 each
200 pc of paper $50.00
4 rolls of ribbon @ 1.99 ea.
Faux Wax sticks (100 sticks) 6.99

Total cost for materials $79.95

I will give you some hints.

1. Try to find paper that have a design on the front and back. The instructions tell you to take 2 different types of paper and glue them together. This took me a long time, but it may have just been me. I even used the spray adhesive in a can and the overspray was messy.

2. The darker paper I bought tended to crack where folded. You could see the white of the paper pulp. It was okay for mine b/c I had a more rustic look to my red paper to begin with. But if that's not the look you want, then I would go w/ lighter colors.

3. Monotype Adhesive was easier for me to use to glue down the flaps and ribbon. I would totally recommend it again.

4. For my wax seals, I made them separately and then I glued them onto the invites. I didn't trust myself to not mess up on the actual invite :) Also, I superglued them to the invite incase the Post Office was being rough with them.

5. I forgot to mention, my invite cards were larger than what the directions were made for. I had to change some of the dimensions so the template didn't work for me. But if you do what the directions say, it will be just as easy.

Hmm, I think that's it. I love how they turned out. I would recommend any bride to make their invites, but............ If your mom is like mine and keeps asking for more. Well, I would prolly do the pre-made ones. I went from having to make 50 invites to 100!!!!! :happysigh:

Here are mine. . . c/p from another thread.

Here's the front:
http://www.geocities.com/kirsten319/_images/our_invite_front.jpg

Here's what it looks like when guests open the invite:
http://www.geocities.com/kirsten319/_images/completed_invite.jpg
Here's a closeup of the invitation:
http://www.geocities.com/kirsten319/_images/invite_closeup.jpg
The mapcard. Because I'm sending out 1/2 announcements and 1/2 invitations, I used the leftover RSVP cards to make the mapcards:
http://www.geocities.com/kirsten319/_images/mapcard.jpg
This is all color coded: different types of roads get different colors. Interstate=red, State highways = blue, etc. etc.
The RSVP. At the last minute I decided to make the "RSVP" hunter green:

Kirsten - I love your invites. The directions card is really impressive. How did you get the roads different colors?
Thanks, Cindy. I got the direction cards done with a Google image, Photoshop and some patience! Basically I laid a new layer over a Googled map then drew in the roads using different colors. It was a tedious process, but I think the maps came out pretty nice.

Thanks for the recommendation! We are debating between those and making our own through cardsandpockets.com...
it makes more sense financially and timewise to buy the leaf ones...
im just not sure about what color to do the lettering...the sample one came in gold, but i thought it was hard to read...

Aubrey and Jennifer....your invites are my absolulte favorites! They are both so cool!

Our invites were a kit that I purchased from Michael's and printed the vellum overlay (3 times now!). I knid of wish I would have spent the money and ordered the ones I really wanted from a company, but that would have cost about $200 more....but I am really pleased with how my invites turned out given I printed them myself and they were super cheap!
http://www.weddingannouncer.com/gallery/files/4/1/7/IMG_3059.JPG

these are the same invites that I had when i married my ex husband! I thought they were so pretty and they turned out great (once you figure out how to print on the damn vellum though)

In case you can't see it, it's two intertwined hearts in silver (our theme) at the top with a matching silver border. It's simple and elegant, which is also the tone of the wedding.

PS- our real invitations don't say "Mr. and Mrs. W." lol.
I just did that for web safety!

Just finished DS-taping ours together, they still need to have the return envelopes addresses + stamped (and the response cards numbered, I've heard that is a must-do), have ribbons tied on them, be stuffed into envelopes and shipped off! I can't wait to mail them. Sorry for all the pics, they took a ridiculous amount of time and I'm kinda proud of them!

09-21-2007, 06:15 AM
oops sorry kelcie and bethie, never answered your questions. i don't know how long it took to design them since I changed it so many times, but it probably took about 4 weekends of off-and-on working on them to finish silkscreening them.
I bought the supplies from cardsandpocketsstore.com. They were the least expensive place I found, but I'm not sure I was totally happy with the quality. Some of the inserts had a big wrinkle in them that wouldn't come out, and the envelopes had a huge "recycle" watermark on them that was distracting. So I guess you get what you pay for :-). I've heard papersource has good quality stuff, but it's also more expensive.

Edited to answer Diane also: I don't think I saved any money making DIY pocketfolds vs. ordering single page invitations. If I had to compare DIY pocketfolds vs. ordered pocketfolds, we probably spent $300 (ink, screens/lamp for silkscreening machine, paper, ribbon, stamps) when it would have cost $700 to custom order them.

We used cardsandpockets.com, but ordered the pocket inserts seperately. I.e. we ordered cardstock from paperandmore.com, and got it cut to our specifications. It worked nicely. We would have saved more on it had MIL not insisted on her guy printing them. But she paid for them, so I don't mind.

While I'm going through photobucket, I might as well post pics of my invitations. The invitations and response cards had a silver border, the invitations also had an intertwined heart design. The reception and diections cards were both plain white card stock that I took to Brian's school to use the paper cutter. I printed everything myself, added silver snowflake stamps to the reception and directions cards, and applied glue and glitter to each piece to give them all a unifed look. While I love the way they turned out, I would only recommend doing all of this to someone that has a whole lot of time on their hands.

I have seen a place where you can get silver paisley paper... I can't remember the name of it at the moment, but when I think of it, I'll let you know.

Here (http://www.rhinestonejewelry.com/buwh.html?source=overture&keyword=rhinestone_buckle&OVRAW=rhinestone%20buckles&OVKEY=rhinestone%20buckles&OVMTC=standard&OVADID=693997022&OVKWID=3943950522) is a place online that sells the buckles. They are a little pricy, but pretty.

How does the ribbon attach to the invitation to hold the inserts. Tied, glue, magic?

Here are ours! :) I never posted them in here...this one belonged to MLWer Sara! :)

My mom and I made them, I designed (with lots of inspiration from other brides!!) and printed, then cut out all the pieces, my mom helped put them all together... pocket-folds are from cardsandpockets.com! It was a lot of work, but I loved them and they were worth it! :)
