I was looking around for the guidelines and "rules" of addressing invitations. Just wondering, did you really ....

not use initials?
use NO abbreviations except Mr., Mrs., Dr., or Jr.?
spell out states names in full?
spell out numbered streets?

* not use initials? yes
* use NO abbreviations except Mr., Mrs., Dr., or Jr.? yes
* spell out states names in full? no
* spell out numbered streets? no

:) Some of those rules are nuts, aren't they? I don't think I came across the first two at all or I probably would have broken them too.

I didn't think the post office wanted you to spell out the state names any more? And if the street sign says 14th Street, isn't that what it is? Not Fourteenth Street?

I had a calligrapher do my envelopes (I only had about 35 sets to send). I think the rules apply if you're super traditional or have a super formal wedding.

Here is what I've decided, I will use initials in one case. There is a boy (now a young man) I use to be his nanny and while his name is John Ross, he has always always gone by JR, so I just don't feel right addressing it as anything else. I will spell out Street, Drive, South, West and the such. I'm using the two letter state abbreviations. I am not spelling out street numbers.

There I created my own invitation addressing guidelines :)

You are right, the PO doesn't like things long, in fact, I was told it is best to abbreviate as much as possible when it comes to street names and stuff.

I basically went by your guidelines, I figure honestly the outside is to make sure the P.O. knows where it's going the inside is for the guest :hehe:

I don't know, my mom addressed the invitations. I am sure she only did 1 & 2. In my opinion 3 & 4 are used only in very formal events.

I addressed the envelopes the wat I wanted to. I don't think I followed any rules. I just addressed them the way I normally address a letter.

I actually did all of it...spelled everything out, no intials, etc. I just liked the way it looked that way :)

I didn't even know of these rules!

not use initials? Yes
use NO abbreviations except Mr., Mrs., Dr., or Jr.? Yes
spell out states names in full? Hell no. Do you know how long Massachusetts is?
spell out numbered streets? No. I only had one guest that lives on a numbered street and it's my brother, he is trying to wear his Chucks in my wedding so do you think he cares?
