View Full Version : Bustle Thread...
I figured if I started the thread, maybe Scarlett would show up :) The Bustle thread was always one of my favorites on other sites!
Lets see those bustles! It is a 7 point underbustle aka Austrian bustle.
Here is mine.

does anyone have a pic of a bustle that lays flat. I have a big ol' booty and I don't need the extra poof of a big bustle. :giggle:
Kari you look amazing in your dress.

5 point overbustle
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/lunarmagic/Wedding/Wedding%20Photos/Reception/bustle-sm.jpg
Beth, just remember, the more points, the flatter it will lay because it will spread out instead of being bunched up on one or two points. Of course, how many you need will also depend on the length of your train.
If I were having an overbustle, I would want AT LEAST 5 points (like in the first and second overbustle pic I posted) but that is just my personal preferance. :)

thanks. I'll take my dress to a seamstress once it comes in and see what we will need. it's also got a chiffon overlay so that will play into the type of bustle that will work to I'm sure.

I don't know how much you know about bustles, so I may possibly delve more information than you want!
A bustle is a series of attachments called points on a dress. There are two basic kinds - overbustles, and underbustles (also known as French and Austrian bustles). Points are always done in odd numbers. A bigger train will require many points, and smaller trains (like sweep and chapel trains) look beautiful with a 1 or 3 point bustle.
Pricing of a bustle depends on how many points are put in, and whether or not it is an over or underbustle.
An over bustle is usually done with a series of loops and buttons - longer trains will have the buttons along the waist line. They look beautiful with gowns that have lots of detailing on the hem, or for someone who has a dress that they wish to have lie flat.
An underbustle is a really dramatic statement - and can be a bit overwhelming if you don't know where to start. Underbustles are a series of ribbons sewn to the inside of the dress. There are two ribbons per each point, and the two ribbons are tied together from underneath the dress to create a pleat in the material. A French bustle is a single row of multiple points, an Austrian bustle is many layers of multiple points. My seamstress numbered each of the 22 ribbons - when it came time to do up the bustle, you tied together the two ribbons of the same number. Most seamstresses will put the ribbons on in some order, usually clockwise. It is also wise to have your MOH or whoever is going to help with your bustle come to the last fitting so they know how it goes together.
So you need to decide on which bustle you like better, and go from there. Make sure you find a seamstress who knows how to do French/Austrian bustles if that is what you decide on. And check to make sure the ribbons are sewn securely to the gown before leaving - they tear and break easily if they are not.
Happy bustle hunting!! :)
ETA: In Kari's first post, she posted an example of an Austrian bustle and French bustle - you can see the difference very clearly between the two.

thanks! i feel better now. i practically had to yell at the lady though in order to get her to freaking fix it the way I wanted. she just kept saying, "oh no, i don't like like dat" she was serioulsy driving me nuts and she pushed away my wedding planners/friends hands while we were trying to show her what i wanted...since it is my dress!
hopefully on tuesday i'll have much better pics and i'll actually be happy with it!

Its easier to describe with pictures. :)
French:

French has one row or layer of the points, and the Austrian has many layers or rows.

Kari - I love bustles so much! I can't stay away from bustle threads!
miss_sparky1978 - my sweep train got stepped on all night - and one of my FG's actually broke two of the points before our grand entrance. :( It had to be safety pinned together. I loved how it looked, though, so it was a trade-off. I would do a sweep train again, but I had an indoor wedding and reception. If I was outside, I wouldn't have had one.

I have to get this done to my dress and I am a little scared to get it done because I have little rosebuds on the back that would still have to look good bustled and not bustled. I have time and I have a seamstress that I think will do a good job.
I hadn't planned on a sweep train. Actually, I don't think my bustle was tied right or maybe it wasn't poofed right, I don't know but somehow I wound up with a sweep train.
I wouldn't change it. I LOVE how it looked in photos. It was only stepped on once and that one time completely undid the bustle. It was as we were leaving so I really wasn't worried about it, I just carried my train. When I checked it later, it turns out it had just come untied anyway.

I know Scarlett had said that points were always done in odd numbers, but mine is actually a 4 point bustle. I don't have a pic of it on my dress, but it looks like this one from p1 of this thread:

She tried to convince me that it wouldn't look pretty with my dress (even though it WOULD - my skirt was PLAIN) and that it would be too hard for my BMs to figure it out (whatever - that's why I brought my MOH with me to the fitting!!) I should have taken it to another seamstress, or ask to see the manager (she was the store's seamstress) but I didn't... :( I think my dress still looked ok (didn't it?) but it wasn't exactly what I wanted...

Just wanted to say yours all look beautiful ladies!
Mine isn't bustled yet but the only bustle the seamstress will do on my dress is a pick-up bustle (1 point). She says the train is too short to do anything else (I'm not sure if it is or not, but here's the dress on me, let me know what you all think):

After looking at all the examples, I think I really do prefer the even point bustle - for certain gowns! I like how it lays flat and the buttons or other design shows all the way down and is not hidden in the folds. Very pretty and unique!!

the train looks long enough to me, but your dress is very straight lined and no waistline. I personally don't like those bustles cause they look like droopy butts... which mine kind of resembled! goodluck

From looking at your pictures, I think the pick up will look just fine. I wanted an underbustle too, but wasn't able to get one...

Scarlett O

Did you buy the dress at David's Bridal? I have heard that they can be really difficult to work with. Personally, I think you should throw a royal stink if it isn't what you want. It is YOUR dress, and you are paying her to do what YOU want. (where is an evil faced smilie when you need one? :heee: ) If not, can you afford to take your dress elsewhere? I know that voids some sort of warranty they have (or something like that), but it might be worth it.
vanessaness - it depends on the type of bustle. My bustle for my dress cost about $120, plus the hem, and other alterations. Most places charge per point in the bustle, and some people charge more for French/Austrian bustles because of the ribbons. ETA: I had an 11-point bustle.

I *finally* found the bustle I want. I was having such a hard time finding one that I thought would work with the pick up skirt on my gown.
This is exactly what the skirt on my gown looks like:

And bustled:
http://www.leanna.com/Bridal/bimages/Tufted02.jpg
16 points, done with hooks and eyes under the jewelled appliques.

http://www.leanna.com/Bridal/bimages/Tufted03.jpg
I'm doing it myself, because there is no way I'm paying someone else to do a 16 point bustle. I'm making my sister wear my dress and stand on a stool so I can make sure it hangs right. :p I'll post pics if I can get it to look right. If I can't, then I don't know what I'll do!
Heather - This is absolutely GORGEOUS!!

Yeah I've actually seen a lot of dresses at the thrift stores...mostly around spring cleaning time...I guess they went through there closets and decided to get rid of them...I have actually had people tell me that maybe it was because of divorce so maybe my dress was bad luck but it needed barely any alterations ...i know now it was meant to be!

I am like trying to take all this information in cause I am so lost on the terms and points and everything. I just learnt what bustle was like last year some time.
What do they use for hooking up the bustle?? I seen one pic were they use a hook type thing....do they all use that??? And does the seamstress just put a little half loop just anywhere on the dress back?? Are these loops noticable???
I have to figure mine out cause I am taking my dress in end of February. I think I need to google bustles, and get some pictures of all the different kinds....and see which one I like the best.
Yes I am back I found this on the Knot (http://www.theknot.com/co_profileview.htm?profilename=bustlebio2) and thought I would share it with you all....it has all kinds of pics of different bustles....enjoy

Ummmmm...I have an interesting dilemma.
I was browsing this thread the words "tied" jumped out at me. When I bought my dress....we didn't pay for a bustle. BUT I did notice some ribbons under the train when I got it. LOL. Are those for the bustle????
I was wondering because we are planning a vow renewal for maybe next year or something, and was thinking I would just buy a much cheaper much more informal dress because MY dress didn't have a bustle...the price for the informal dress and to pay for the re preservation of my wedding gown plus a bustle would be about the same. BUT if those ribbons ARE the buslte...it would be much cheaper to go with my original dress.
Renny
01-25-2007, 06:39 PM
I would think if there are several of them then yes they are the bustle. check to see if they are numbered because sometimes they will be numbered so that you know which matches which for tying.
*alissa*
01-25-2007, 07:01 PM
No...they aren't numbered.....I uh...sorta popped it outta the box.
BUT...there are several of them. I think 7 all together...
I have NO idea how they would tied though....
it seems wierd...there are three across at two points..then one at the bottom.
Would they be tied to the ribbon above them?

The tricks of the train; the art of the bustle. We take these time-shrouded mysteries and lay it all out for the bride-to-be.
Back in the Middle Ages, when fine fabric was scarce, the length of your train was a quick way to impress the crowd with your wealth … and standing.
But by the Victorian age, this simple equation got complicated. And under Queen V., bustling became an art form, complete with all kinds of floral treatments and fussily interwoven ribbons and lace.
Today, we’re back to simpler lines. And still, a gown with a train suggests formality. The longer the train, the more formal the wedding, usually.
So, what is a train exactly? Most of us have some idea: it’s that extension in the back of the skirt that trails you when you walk down the aisle. As it turns out, there are two major types: built-in and detachable.
Built-ins are sewn into the actual skirt pattern when the dress is made. These are the kind you pull up and bustle after the ceremony. So a detachable train, logically, is a separate component, not sewn in.
Typically, you ditch your detachable after the ceremony (though I’ve seen a bride or two bustle them every so often, to keep that Gigi look going for the party).
Trains, from Short to Long
The Sweep: Typically extends a foot or so past the hemline.
The Chapel: Considered formal. Extends about 2 feet beyond the hemline. Tres chic right now.
The Cathedral: Formal. Generally a 3 foot extension from the hemline. Needs bustling treatment post ceremony.
The Royal: Very long. Diana Spencer’s was twenty-five feet! Ultra-formal look for big churches and cathedral ceremonies.
Popular Styles in What Lies Behind
http://www.favorideas.com/images/bustle-audrey.jpgWatteau: Named for the eighteenth-century painter who popularized his models in them. They attach at the shoulder and fall to the hemline or beyond.
Panel Train: Fabric in a long strip or A-line shape. Typically attach to the waist, though sometimes they’re fastened to the back or shoulders.
Bouffant Panel: A type of semi-skirt gathered onto a band at the back waist. Sometimes extends the hip area. Popular with sheath and A-line silhouettes. Check out Audrey Hepburn’s party dress in Sabrina for a classic example.
Overskirt: Gathered or fitted onto a belt you can unhook for the reception. Might be composed of solid fabric, like duchesse satin, or something transparent like organza.
Fishtail: Either a built-in extension or godet (triangle of fabric inserted in the seam).
Tricks of the Train
http://www.favorideas.com/images/bustle-over-1.jpgIf your heart’s set on an ultra- formal gown and you’re petite, concentrate on exquisite fabric or embroidery, not length. A sweep train and/or chapel veil is about as far as you can go and stay in proportion.
Heavier? Go any length. But keep in mind: thick, textured, adorned fabrics won’t show you at your best. If you’re tall and slender, lucky you! Choose any length and fabric that fits your fancy … without over-embellishing.
The 411 on Formals
Evening gown silhouettes in lightweight fabrics are pretty straightforward, and they come with both built-in and detachable trains. Sheath silhouettes come with mostly detachable ones, unless they sport a fishtail treatment.
But if your heart’s set on an A-line or ballgown in medium to heavyweight fabrics like Duchesse and Peau de Soie, your train will probably be built-in, and chapel or cathedral-length. These are the more formal gowns — and when you visit a salon, you’re just not as likely to see them displayed.
If you do, or a sales consultant brings one out, take a close look at how the gown holds its shape on the hanger or dress form. If it’s hanging up, you’ll probably see it on a molded form-hanger, bustled and/or displayed at least a foot apart from its neighbors. If it’s on dress form, great — that’s almost as good as you wearing it. You’ll see it at its best.
Glide Like a Bride
http://www.favorideas.com/images/bustle-detach-3.jpgThings to look for in these very formal gowns: check whether or not the skirt (read: skirt, not the underslip) seems to have a structure that stands on its own. It should. This structure reveals how the gown is lined and hemmed.
When you pick up the skirt — including the train — and look closely at the hemline, you’re likely to find a 3-6” wide band of horsehair. That’s the clear and meshy edging at the hemline that gives the bottom of the dress some flex as well as firmness. Notice how the skirt and train extension seem to hold that precision shape. It’s the horsehair that gives the skirt that full, gliding Cinderella flair when you move instead of swishing from side to side (and here you thought she was just a pro!).
Typically, horsehair is sewn on the inside of the hem. But most designers today bring the skirt lining over the horsehair edging completely, leaving a clean a finish inside and out. Which is useful — since you might find yourself walking over brick or cobblestones that could trip you up or get caught up in the horsehair. With that clean finish work inside, when you lift your skirt to walk up stairs, the horsehair stays demurely hidden. Ahhh.
The Art of the Bustle
http://www.favorideas.com/images/bustle-detach-1.jpgBustle, bustled, bustling. These fusty-sounding words translate into sweet, sweet freedom at your reception. In a bustle, your skirt’s gathered and tacked up so you can do the Mashed Potato whenever the mood moves you. Once a gown is bustled, it goes through a kind of metamorphosis. And so does the bride in it.
There are two main approaches to bustling: overbustles and underbustles (the French style). Usually, bustling is secured with hooks and/or ribbon, typically narrow strips of grosgrain.
Overbustling is the simplest approach, good for that obliging Maid of Honor. It involves picking up and tacking the skirt to the waist for chapel and cathedral lengths, or behind the knee for sweeps. Underbustling goes the other way—down and under, fastening to points on the under slip. Longer trains can handle a combination of over and under-bustling at once … often, with stunning results.
Additional or custom bustling is done after you finish the bodice fitting. How many bustle points you might add is up to you and your alterations person.
To Bustle, or Not?
http://www.favorideas.com/images/bustle-detach-2.jpgBut keep in mind: not every dress bustles beautifully. Ballgowns with skirts in flimsy layers, for one … like tulle or organza. All those layers add up to a hassle! After all, bustling's done layer-by-layer, which costs time and money for a gown like this — for most brides, it isn’t worth it. Also, some gowns with sweep trains, godets or fishtails don’t bustle well.
But overall, most dresses do bustle beautifully, and are a joy to wear. And as every bride knows, a bustled train remains one of the most elegant and romantic elements of any wedding gown.

Stunning - I love the simplicity of it. I would do a single-point pick up bustle, and have the seamstress start it where the train starts to unfold. I think it is a little long to leave just as is.
:computer:
I think your gown would look lovely with a satin loop to pick up
the dress, not done a lot anymore, but the size of your dress is perfect for it. It is a lovely, elegant look as well to have your dress picked up in this fashion.
