Hi gals. I was just wondering why you came up with 500 pixels as the max size for message boards, it seems like 640 is the standard size for most message boards. It's a PITA to resize all my pictures, and most picture hosting sites auto resize to 640x480.... just my suggestion that you should change it to a standard photo size. :)

I think they had it set for 500x500 because large pictures suck up bandwidth and can make pages incredibly hard to load. The current guidelines make it easier on everyone to have a fresh, fast page loading for everyone. :)
Maybe another member of management has a better answer though.

The picture size doesn't have any effect on MLW bandwidth because the pics aren't hosted on MLW servers. If I had to make an educated guess, tho. Is because a 500px wide picture...Add in all of the other formatting borders and such of MLW...And you'll be at the average users screen width.
Where if you go for a 640px wide image, then you'll end up with a horizontal scroll bar, stretching the screen, etc...
Just a guess. :)

I understand why there is a limit on size, I was just wondering why it wasn't a standard size instead of an arbitrarily chosen 500... hence my suggestion for 640. Photobucket has a "resize for message boards" option that auto resizes to 640.

ah ok Jer you posted before I read it, that may make since if that is why.

You can still use photobucket to resize, just use the "email" settings.

And here we thought we were being generous, because Shutterfly resizes to 480 by default. :heee:
Seriously, though, Jer is exactly right. A 640px wide picture will stretch people's screens, and that's just a PITA.

Shutterfly people, Shutterfly!
Always the perfect size, unlimited storage and hotlinking.
Photobuckets "standard" auto resize was NOT the standard when MLW was created. That was a change that site made after our rules were in place.
And for the record? No decisions here are EVER arbitrarily made. There is a reason for everything whether the general membership realizes it or not.

I'm not sure why you felt the need to make that comment, it came off just a little rude, like I was somehow being disrespectful for asking a question. I totally understand if the reasons are that the screens will be stretched. My computer has a larger screen and it didn't occur to me that the reason was to keep from having to scroll over. Is 500 the maximum size a picture can be without stretching the screen? otherwise 480 or 640 (standard picture sizes) make sense, and 500 DOES seem arbitrary, my apologies for asking the MLW gods for an explanation.

I'll try not to question authority anymore :wink1:

Laura, I am not sure what reaction you were hoping for from your post. If it was meant to be funny, it isn't. If it was meant to be rude, I think you kicked ass at that. Please be careful that you don't cross the line to bashing.
I know Kari well enough to know that it was not her intention to be rude. Was your question answered? Truly there are reasons for the rules and people should feel free to ask those reasons. If you misunderstood Kari's post as rude or dictorial, we can have an adult discussion about that without resorting to insults.

I did not mean to be insulting. Sorry, I just felt that she didn't really answer my question while implying I had no right to ask it since I am a member of the general MLW membership. How could that possibly be construed as bashing? I was hurt by how she answered my suggestion. She pretty much told me to respect her authority without no explanation. She could have said "this is why we have the rule.... (insert explanation).... sorry we can't change it!" instead of telling me that MLW powers have already made a decision, and OF COURSE it's not arbitrary... and then no explanation.

Maybe if you had just said that instead of posting the cartoon and calling us "MLW gods", it would have been received better.
Did you get your question answered? That is the most important thing.

And here I thought Lacie did answer the question when she said I was correct. I dunno about anyone else, but I took Kari's post as just a clarification that Photobucket didn't create this "standard" until after the rule was in place. And that each aspect of MLW is discussed, voted on, re-discussed, whatever...Not just "drawn out of a hat".

I use shutterfly for general pics and photobucket for like my blinkie, smilies, and other gif. formats just so I know I stay in the picture guidelines.
I think it was Raychel that mentioned shutterfly earlier and well I just wanted to back her up on it being the best for general picture posting. (if it wasn't Raychel I'm sorry and agree with who it was )

I do not want any of the MLW members to get the wrong idea. We have never minded innocent questions from our members. We are more than happy to answer questions.
Laura, had you asked, "How did you guys come up with the 500x500 picture size? Just wondering." You would have been gotten your answer no problem.
But when you come in telling the admin what they should and should not do on their privately owned board, without even knowing why their policies are in place, it won't go over quite as well. That is like walking into someone's house for dinner and telling them that what they have put on the table is not to your liking. They should serve you beef. After all, everyone else serves you beef.

You also dain to assert that the size limit is "arbitrarily chosen" before you have even waited to hear the reason for it. Just because the one hosting program that you use has a size of 640, does not make it the "standard size."

The message I am really trying to send is - we are more than happy to answer questions. But a question politely asked will have an answer politely given.

My question was answered, thanks. And it is a suggestion board, I was trying to leave a suggestion. Apparently I am the only one frustrated with having to resize my pictures. I got a good answer to my question, I was totally satisfied before the previous posts.
And I guess I thought this was a community where everyone was welcome to make suggestions. Sorry for offending anyone.
Just because the one hosting program that you use has a size of 640, does not make it the "standard size."
Bingo!
and since the OP has gotten an answer to thier question, there is no need to continue beating a dead horse.
I am closing this thread.
