You make a duplicate layer, turn it black and white, adjust the brightness/contrast so it's really contrasty, and lower the opacity so the color shows through. :)

Another really good site is http://touchstonesart.com/
Her tutorials are password protected, you just have to e-mail her and she'll give you the username and pass -- I know them, but it's better that you e-mail her to let her know you're using them. Hers are GREAT -- very thorough and easy to follow, but they're a bit different than just colorizing.

I just got Adobe Creative Suite Premium 2...I realized that if we ordered the digital package from the photog, I'd be making albums, and I wanted more software to do it. Granted, I've never used photoshop before, nevermind the wiz-bang stuff that comes in this version! But the best part? I got it from the school webstore for $200, cause I'm still considered a student for another few weeks!

Do you have photoshop? Here's a quick way to do it:
~Down to the right where the LAYERS tool is, right-click on the current layer and select "duplicate layer".
~Then turn the image to B&W by whatever method you use (grayscale, channel mixer, desaturate, etc)
~Take the eraser icon, set it to 100% opacity, and erase whatever you want in COLOR.

Just a little hint (for those of you using Photoshop and not Elements) about doing the spotted color:
-DON'T use the eraser! Add a layer mask to the grayscale layer. When you want to bring back the color, paint black. If you make a mistake, simply paint white over it to bring back the grayscale. No more undos...ever! Also, you can use a brush with no hardness to create a more natural look.

There's lots of ways to do it.....the description I gave wasn't necessarily the "best"....just a quick way. ;)
Oh, I agree with you totally! The eraser method, IMO, is the best way for a beginner. I just think that the mask way is a lot less frustrating. I could never stay in the lines when I was coloring! :D

Mandy
08-30-2006, 08:28 PM
I'm confused...is there a shorter way in Photoshop? The eraser is pretty time consuming (unless I'm doing it wrong!). Here's another I just did of the stained glass window at our church where we'll be getting hitched!
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e273/MandyMaloo/stainedglass2.jpg
I agree with Kate....setting up an action will make it go a lot faster. When you create an action, you can set it up so that pushing one button (like F7) will automatically start the action for you.

do you still have the directions for this?
Stacey - I apologize for taking so long to post these instructions, but here they are!
Okay, you start out with a new file. I made the canvas about 11 inches wide by 2 inches high (for the skinny ones - for the one I did for Jenn, I made it more square). When you use the Text tool, it automatically makes another layer (by the way, make sure you have your Layers window open) and names it whatever you type. I did each letter individually (went back to the Backround layer after typing each letter and then made another layer with the next letter). Once you've made all your layers with one letter in each, you pick out your pictures. Oh, by the way, the font I used is Goudy Stout. It has the thickest letters and is the easiest to fit letters into. I resized the pictures and just eyeballed how the would fit into the particular letter. You select the whole picture and copy it.
Then you go back to the file with all the letters in it, go over to your Layers window and hold down Ctrl (or the equivilant for a Mac) and click on the layer with the letter you want. That should outline the letter like a selection. Then you can either go to Edit > Paste Into or hold down Ctrl/Shift/V. That should paste the picture into the letter. You can move the picture around until you get it like you want it. If it's too big/small, use your History window to go back before Load Selection and then go back to your picture file and resize it.
My Photoshop automatically makes all the new files in Grayscale so the pictures all turn to black and white. I kind of like that look, especially if you have a colored backround, but you can switch it to Color before you make all the letters if you want to have color pictures.
Anyway, now use the Paintbucket to fill in the backround with grey. Make sure you fill in any holes in letters like B or R, etc. Now go up and change it to RGB color, chose a backround color and fill in the backround again, this time with a color. I think the color backround with b&w photos helps the letters stand out. If you switch it to color before you fill the backround in with grey, you lose the defined edges of the letters.
Once you do it a couple of times, it's really easy. The trickiest part was resizing the photos and taking them out/putting them in a bunch of times.
I must admit that I agree that the trickiest part was getting photos to fit properly - takes a little bit of practice :)

I love this one, DJ. Very pretty. :)
Just a quick tip, don't change the image to greyscale, doing so will change both layers to greyscale and you can't add color back into the image with it in greyscale. So if you are doing the two seperate layers and just erasing the grey layer, you'll see a grey layer underneath. Always just desaturate it!

Yes. Depending on the placement of the other people, it can be a little tricky, but it can be done. :)Thanks now that I know it can be done I will have to scan some pictures and start practicing.
Hi hi-
How do you get it so it's crisper around the edges? If you look at the picture I did of my friends, there are some areas that are really muddled. I have basically learned to do this program by playing with it, and found the little wizard wand and the eraser button very useful when used together in order to get some areas. In other pictures I have worked with, however, it's a bit more difficult. Is there any other tricks of the trade for pictures to play with?
TTFN...
D.J.
DJ, what program are you using? If you are using photoshop (any version) try using a quick mask (though I can't give a tutorial, I'm horrible at explaining things and it's not easy to figure out). You can find tutorials online, it will give you a lot more control over what you are selecting.
Hi hi-

How small is the picture compared to the overall image? If it's just a bit smaller, you can use the Transform tool to make it bigger. Just hit Control-T to bring up your transform tool. While holding the shift button down (so the image keeps the correct proportions), drag the corners to the edges (or wherever you may place it).
If it is WAY smaller, then you are going to have to do some work to it first. I cannot guarantee this will work, but it is worth a shot.
-Take the picture and go to Image->Image Size
-You are going to increase the image by 110%. You can find the percentage under "Document Size"
-If you are using Photoshop CS or CS2, then make sure you resample the image using Bicubic Smoother
-Repeat until the picture is large enough
-You may want to do some sharpening at this point
Like I said, the second method may not work, but it is always worth a try. I've made the resizing into an action, which really speeds up the process.
Good luck!

I have a request. :)
I don't have photoshop but I have seen that I can download a trial of Adobe Photoshop CS2. Would this work? If anyone could walk me through on how to do some simple ones (ie black and white with colour flowers) I could it myself.
Or if anyone wants to volunteer to do a couple for me I would appreciate it!

Well I reread the instructions and downloaded a free trial of photoshop and I figured out how to do the colour replacement. It was really quite easy!

Our photographer did a few for us:

I love how this turned out! The rocking chair she took this on was a nasty brownish-orange color and I was soooo worried at how it was going to turn out, but it came out perfectly!

D.J.,
I found easy instructions on page 2 from Kate and it works perfectly for me. I also zoom in very close and that way I can get it down to the pixel. ;)
If you need further help just le me know. :)
Oooh, these are all great!
I just tried these two, using the instructions from this thread!

Ohh, the one in the mirror I just combined two separate pictures, changed the curves and then "pastelified" it. The black and white one I just took a regular picture, colorspotted the eyes (then changed the color on the first layer so the eyes would look yellow and not blue), put a shadow in, and took away the mouth. Haha.. I get really bored sometimes and love to mess with pictures, so I come up with some pretty weird ideas.

That's awesome I'm definitly going to try that. Don't worry, photoshopping with pictures is a really good hoppy;) Was the corpses looking one hard to do?
MostlyMel
05-09-2007, 03:00 PM
No, not at all. The "glass mouth" (I actually tried getting it to look like paper but other people have said it looked like glass) was the trickiest part. Actually, it wasn't very hard to do that either, but it was frustrating trying to mess with the edges of it and the colors to make it look realistic. The rest of the picture was really easy to do. I changed the color balance, hue, and saturation, put in a warming filter, and then changed the shadows/highlights. I turned the shadows all the way down and the highlights all the way up. I also turned the brightness down quite a bit, and messed with the curves. I don't remember the specifics of any of these.. I just like to play around with things until it looks how I like it.
