We have decided to jump the broom. It is very important to DH Here are a few links. I will probably make my own if I find a good guide.
http://www.african-weddings.com/home
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2 F&fkr=1&from=R8&satitle=wedding+brooms&category0=
I found a broom at Michaels and got it for $3.00. I am going to add some ribbon and flowers and call it good.

Hey I have a question for y'all. What's the custom of ringing a bell and saying "the bride is coming, the bride is coming!" I saw it on a couple of Bridezillas and I've been so curious as to what it signifies! A little girl does it, like, instead of a flower girl.

From my research (which I admit is limited to Google and other search engines, lol), this is a new trend and not a tradition for any ethnic group. It can be a boy or girl and used in addition to or in place of flowergirls or ring bearers.

Cool, I didn't know if it was tied with Kwanzaa stuff. I don't know anything about Kwanzaa but isn't the broom jumping tied in with those beliefs? I thought maybe they were all a package deal.
I personally thought the bride is coming thing was a tad odd, but the little girl that did it was SUPER cute! Same goes for an episode last season - new tradition I'm not how I feel about but the little girl was PRECIOUS!

Kwanzaa was established in 1966 and is a holiday much like Hanukkah. Kwanzaa has nothing to do with weddings. It is just a holiday.
Jumping the broom started in Africa. It was used by slaves to show that an union had taken place. Slaves were not allowed to legally married so "jumping the broom" was used.
Although Kwanzaa and jumping the broom both have African American roots neither is related to the other.

KYA!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm here. I missed talk to the ladies. Ashleybear sent me a message on myspace telling me about MLW... so of course I came quick fast in a hurry. I only wished I would have saved my wedding story from UW. I really don't want to write all the sad parts over again. Maybe I write a short story and post all the pictures. I did finally get the other pictures my friends took. it was right when UW when down again for good. I cried because i thought i would have all those loving and supportive ladies to chat with anymore. I'm glad I was wrong. DH is going to have a fit when he finds out we have a new site. He was like the wedding is over why are you still on the wedding sites. LOL. He just don't understand... you ladies are like family to me. We have to be here for one another even after the wedding is over.

My family loves DH. No questions about it. But it wasn't always like that. When we first got married it took my family a few yrs to accept it and him.It is his family that doesn't like me.

I have been married to him for 18+ yrs and I can tell you it is still great. People always tell us they admire our marriage. He is my best friend more than anything and that has gotten us thru some tough times.
As far as the broom we are still trying to decide.

Hey guys what is or was said during your broom jumping ceremony? My Hawaiian minister has no clue and since I have never been married I don’t either.
Thanks!

This is how it worked at our friend's wedding.
The couple turned towards each other for their kiss.
"you may kiss the bride", minister
They kiss.
"May I present Mr. & Mrs. Lastname", minister.
The couple turns toward the guests, jump the broom and leave down the aisle.
Is that the way it is suppose to go? I have no clue. But it is the only time I have seen it. I have never heard of it being a ceremony (with words and such).

This is pretty much what we did. After the kiss, we turned and faced the crowd. Then the officiant (my stepdad) read a couple of sentences about what we were doing and why. We had done a modified lasso ceremony earlier and he also explained that a bit.
Hello everyone how things going today?!
