And if you investigated both options, which one saved you more money?

I went through a travel agent and she, being the good negotiator, was able to get us a great deal on the all-inclusives published price.

We booked everything ourselves. I researched a ton of different web sites to find the best deals available. We ended up booking our cruise and airfare directly with each company. I booked our NYC hotel through the city's official tourism web site after finding a killer deal on a place in a great location.

We planned it ourselves...or more like, I did. :sappy: We had researched a bit through travel agents, and then we completely changed where we went, and we booked our hotel online through Expedia.com, as well as some of our things to do. We went to Niagara Falls, so we did some "adventurous" things that Expedia offered.

We planned ours. We went to NYC and there is so much information on line for there (plus all the help from the other girls who also went there on here) that I never felt the need for additional help. Although more help on getting around with Chris in the wheelchair would have been nice. But like most places it is really just a matter of going and dealing with each situation as it came up for us that worked best.

We planned it ourselves but actually booked it through a travel agent simply so we could have someone to call if anything went wrong while we were there.

After looking at many destinations and talking to several travel agents in each area, we realized that we ALWAYS found better deals ourselves than what they could give us. Everything the travel agents said seemed good at the time but we kept discovering better deals on our own. So eventually we planned everything by ourselves (well, mostly me) and I don't really care to try using travel agents for any trips in the future.

We found and planned everything ourselves as well.

we've done both, used agents for cheap flights and then used the internet for cheaper rooms, tours etc..

I'm going to plan ours myself. Not just because of finding cheap deals, but also because I enjoy it :)

DH went through a travel agent. After doing a lot of research online (at Expedia, Hotels.com, and the Disneyland website), he found that the travel agent was able to get us better deals on tickets, airfare, hotel, and extras like the transit to and from the park, and a character breakfast in the park itself. I'm not sure exactly how much he saved, but it was a considerable amount!

I spent about a half hour a day for weeks going to different travel websites trying to get the best deal, then I checked out American Airlines site and their tickets were $50 cheaper each! So we book those and I called the hotel to talk to the manager about some review I had read and my concerns, since San Francisco is so different one block to the next. He gave us their newly remodeled junior suite for half price as long as we promised to stay 4 nights. We only ended up staying 3 nights there as we spent a few days in wine country, but paid for 4 and it was till a lot cheaper that way.

Half and half-- We planned the last 3 weeks, which were combined with study abroad, and we chose the eco-resort we wanted to go to, but since that part was a gift from the in-laws, they used a travel agent to book that week and the hotel on either end of it.

I planned it myself. We changed our minds about where we were going to go and I did not want to go through a travel agent for either place.

Michael's Aunt is a travel agent, and she helped him in planning everything -- getting the hotels together, booking our rental car, surprising me with our flower leis when we got off the plane in Honolulu :) Oh I want to do it all over again!!!

We used a travel agent. It saved us a TON of money, and we were able to book excursions and spa visits through him also.

We booked through an agent. We went to a few different islands in Hawaii and it was too complicated (all the inter-island transfers, etc.) to book by myself online.

We're using a travel agent. They're a family friend of ours and when I started doing everything she offered to help. Yay! She's really the one doing everything, LOL. It's been a great help.
