Ok, so here's the deal. Kathy and I just got into Geneology here about a year ago and in doing research on both sides. We stumbled across a rather odd last name. Yes - on both sides.
Thankfully, this name dates the late 1800s on each side. It's my Great Grandmother, not sure of the relationship for Kathy, it's very distant, tho. We've not dug deep enough to find if there is a connection or if it's just fluke. But, will make for some interesting research. :D
Anyone else ever find strange connections like this? :D

Funny thing is I'm in Ohio and she's in Ottawa, Ontario! LoL
first glance we initially think no, it's not. Two seperate countries. But the more we look, we did find some border jumpers in the histories...So, who knows? LoL

I mean, s'not stopping us. It's so distant we're not terribly concerned. LoL And may not even 'connect', but there's a chance. LoL

For the love of do you not know its Ireland
(no offence to the Irish lassies but we all know about Leitrim :hide: )
No not to me but yes reserching genelogy my cousin worked out that she and her husband are also distantly related but you have to go back something like eight generations so it was ok
KathyandJer

That's the same with us...in our family, there is a bit of a tradition where a son is given the maiden name of the mother as his middle name. My brother, my uncle, my great-uncle...and we can trace this back at least 4 or 5 generations.
When we got into the further-back history, there is a man (my great-great-grandfather, I believe) with this strange middle name that is the same as Jer's great-great-grandmother (I think?)... and I just wondered if there was a connection further back, and he was given his mother's maiden name as a middle name :dontknow:
As we piece things together though, there's a definite possibility, because Jer's grandmother (or great-grandmother) was originally from Quebec (I believe)...and I had alot of relatives move from Prince Edward Island or Ontario down to the US (different states)!
:caught:
I won't even tell you about my family. I think it's a SMALL town thing, rather than any particular area of the country.
But no, Chris and I are NOT related, not as far as our geneology tells us...but our families by themselves...well, let's just leave it at that.
*meghan*
07-19-2006, 06:01 PM
My aunt's 2nd husband has the same last name as her and my mom's great-grandmother. They never dug into it, but we all wondered if they were related somehow.......good thing they aren't married anymore :heee:
Lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, but I am scared to find out though!!

My great-great-grandparents were cousins. Maybe that's how they did it in the old country.

Ohhh, it's definitely a small town thing  One of my bridesmaid's has an Uncle Grandpa. I don't remember the exact story, but she grosses out. Albeit a little weird, technically "uncle grandpa" and grandma were not related at all... And there's a few other twisted roots in the family tree - same situation in all of them too - no blood relatives...just weird scenarios :lol2:

Wow! That's something else! There's no way FH and I are even remotely related. He can claim a very distant relation to Marilyn Monroe though. Kinda cool, eh?

I had weird connections to an ex-boyfriend...my aunt Lois is married to a guy named Don. My Uncle Don's step-mom was previously married to my ex-boyfriend's great-uncle! Yes, it was all by marriage!
Now with my DH, my mom has found someone with the same last name as DH's in a family geneaolgy book...however, we're not thinking it's any relation!
Isn't it crazy how in small towns everyone is related?
Oh, and on another note we have a group of 12 friends, and we've decided that we're all related SOMEHOW! Let's see, I'm married to DH, and his brother is married to Sally. Sally is related to 2 of the other girls, one of which's DH is my 5th cousin. Oh and another one of the guys and I share a relative -- his uncle (By marriage) is my 3rd cousin...yeah, a bit confusing!

Well, I tried to do it on the computer, but realized it would be much easier just writing it out! It wasn't TOO difficult...I'm not sure on ALL of our connections (so that's why some say "related")

Tom and I are related through marriage.....my step-grandmother's son-in-law is his mother's cousin. Confusing, huh? There really is no relation, thank goodness....we just think it's funny.
Spatula Girl
07-20-2006, 05:23 PM
That's funny  - but not impossible. When my cousin on my mom's side was getting married, we discovered that his future wife was actually related to US on my dad's side. So they weren't related, but we were related to both the bride and groom:).

No, it's North Carolina. No kidding, in looking up marriage certificate requirements I learned you can marry your first cousin in North Carolina! :gag: But not a double first cousin (what ever the heck that is) I mean we do have some standards here :giggle:
So Jer and Kathy if you need to move here let me know I'll help you find a house :)

DH and I are not realated at all. On DH's side there is one weird thing with one of his mom's cousins where the cousin married an aunt. I'm so confused by the story though.

Oh, but Chris did "date" his Aunt in high school. :lol2: He has an Uncle not much older then him and he went out with the girl his Uncle ended up getting married to. Yes, he is from a small town!

Wow, I reasearched my and Dh's geneology a little, absolutley no relations there! (But,then again, it was hard pinpointing my granny, she lived in the hills of kentucky, and they weren't very good record keepers there!) so maybe if I was able to research more on her side....????? LOL
Okay, here's my weird familial relationships story- my sister and I are our own cousins. We have the same great-grandfather six generations back on my mom's side and five generations back on my dad's side, so my mom and dad are cousins, so my mom's kids would be cousins with my dad's kids- but my mom and dad's kids are the same people, so we're our own cousins! :O
And I'm with Amanda- it's Arkansas. And ironically enough I went to school in Arkansas- appropriate, huh? :D

alright guys! i'm an alabamian!!! thanks!
haha, no, i'm just kidding. you'll find more of that in rural alabama/mississipi areas. maybe even tennessee? it's not *as* common as you all may think... but i have to admit i do know of one uncle marrying his neice (direct niece at that!). but that's it. only one. lol. and im not helping my reputation am i?

I had a weird relationship thing happening in my family for a bit....
My mom's brother, Bruce, was married to a woman named Bobbi. They had my cousin, Josh. They got divorsed.
Bobbi then had another child with a man named Sam. They never married and wound up breaking up, but were only attached by the kid.
My dad was remarried to a woman named Celia for awhile. Celia wound up having an affair with Sam. So, technically, my step mother hooked up with my cousins, brother's dad....
So, technically, my step mother hooked up with my cousins, brother's dad....
Whoa... headache trying to figure that out, even with the clear explanation....
hah, I gotcha, but only because I understand the cousin's brother's dad...I have a half bro myself.

Closest I come is within my own family-
My mom's brother married my dad's sister (aunt and uncle since divorced). So their son, Andy, is our "double cousin" and my sis, brother and I tease him that is pretty much our sibling since he has all the same basic genes.
Well, Andy is also only 4 months younger than me and we both had blonde hair and blue eyes when we were little (we both still do, although my hair is "helped along"). So there are pics of us as toddlers where we could be fraternal twins.

I am from West Virginia, and in order to get married here they ask you if you are cousins.
My cousins are actually on our family tree twice. They are on each side. What are you gonna do, really. It happens.

Isn't it crazy how in small towns everyone is related?
Not True. I'm from a small town and we're not all related. Maybe it's different in the US but in Canada that isn't true.
There are more small towns in canada then there are large cities.

My Mom is from a town where everyone is related pretty much. If you go to the local fair Grandma would say "There's a cousin, there's your aunt, there's another cousin", etc, etc.

my dad has double first cousins. lets just see if i can explain this.... my dad's parents (my grandparents) had siblings that married each other as well. so both sisters each married a brother. there for their children are double first cousins. meaning that both sets of cousins have the same grandparents, cousins etc...

Both Ron and I did some research ~ his is very much homogenous from this area of the Netherlands. Pure Dutch. My background on the other hand is, on my dad's side, traced back to Frederick Wilhelm I of Prussia and the area of Germany now called Baden-Wuerttemburg. My mother's side is Welsh and Scottish. The only connection is that some people on my dad's side married into the royal Dutch family. Ron's family isn't even close to the royal Dutch family though!
Funnily enough... my best friend's last name is Jansen. She was born in Renkum (where ALL of Ron's family is from) and adopted by the Jansen's. Ron has family who also are called Jansen :) So we jokingly say that she is his cousin (she's adopted though and we know nothing about her bio-parents at all, but... there is a chance that they *could* be related because Renkum is a tiny town and they are all pretty much related to each other  )

Same thing happened somewhere in my family history. I think it was either three sisers from one family married 3 brothers from another or 2 sisters and 1 brother married 2 brothers and a sister.

Looking through our family tree, I had to laugh because I have one great great uncle who seemed to just work through all the girls in one family - he was married, then widowed; married his first wife's sister - again he was widowed; and yup, you guessed it - married his first and second wife's sister
There were a few things in the family tree that were hard to figure out :headscratch:

Oh my god, could you imagine how traumatic that would be??? Ugh.
My story isn't nearly as twisted as that one, Kate, but I'll share it anyway.
My biological father, Johnny, has a sister, Susan.
My mother, Linda, has a first cousin, Robert.
Susan and Robert married each other. So because Robert is my Aunt Susan's husband, he's my Uncle Robert through marriage. But because he's my mom's first cousin, he's my second cousin, or cousin once removed or however they say it. So I always call him Uncle Cousin Robert. :heee:
