View Full Version : Finding "THE ONE"

Okay ladies...when you were gown shopping...did you know when you put "THE ONE" on? Or did you like several and then just have to decide which one you liked BEST???

I went shopping yesterday and probably tried on about twenty dresses...there were about four that I could see myself wearing on my wedding day!! One is out there in first place, but the others are close behind...I am not done looking/shopping, but I am worried that I will like a few different dresses by the time I am all finished!

So...how many of you found "IT" and did any of you like a lot??

:)

I think I tried on about 20 dresses and went to 3 different stores before I found "the one".

Out of the four that you could see yourself wearing, what do you like about them? style? color? embellishments? For example, I knew that I wanted a strapless gown. I knew that I had to have a ball gown. I knew that the gown had to be ivory because white didn't look good with my skin tone.

At first, I thought I wanted a heavily beaded bodice. I tried on a pintuck gown even though I hated them in magazines. After that, I knew that it was the style for me. I didn't even look at any other type of gown.

Once you figure out what you like and what looks good on you, stick to it. Try on different types. Tulle skirt, all over lace, sheath, ball gown, a-line, gowns with color, strapless, v-neck, etc. Don't just try on what you like in magazines. I've found that the ones I liked in magazines looked horrible on me and the ones I hated in magazines were my favorite.

Anyway, don't worry and have fun! :D

When I put "the one" on I thought I was going to hate it... but then when I looked in the mirror I saw a queen and that queen was me :D I knew instantly it was the one... good luck.

I was looking for something atypical, so it was easier for me to find a dress than most people I think. But I agree with wendy, that when you find certain aspects of what you love, stick with those. In the end, it could all come down to price. :)

Im in the same boat!! I can't find THE ONE! I have found a few that I like and had a close call with one but it ended up not being it ( I wanted to do to many changes to it) I am still on the prowl so don't give up yet you will find it!

Our engagement was 7 months so it's not like I had years to shop. I also am not a big shopper so I went twice and chose my dress on the second outting. Once I put it on, I just loooved it. But I'm sure that if I kept looking I would have found others, so I stopped there.

I found my gown the first and only day that I went shopping. It was about the 7th or 8th one I tried on, and that feeling hit me like a ton of bricks! It also helped that my mom and FMIL's mouths dropped to the ground when I walked out of the dressing room! I love how it feels, I love the fabric, I love the weight (or lack thereof), I love the train, and I love how I feel like a princess when I wear it :kimgrill: I want to go home now and try it on again...

I tried on a ton of dresses....I narrowed it down to 5 I liked, then narrowed that 5 down to 3. I then asked friends and such what dress they liked best, took that into consideration and then picked my dress. The dress I ended up picking, I picked because I had been in love with the dress since we got engaged, but I just hadn't found it to try on until my last dress shopping day. I'm so happy I chose the dress I did...I've yet to find anyone else that is wearing that dress! :)

Yay for dress shopping, Beth!

I went shopping a couple of different times and I'd find PARTS of dresses that I liked. When shopping with my Mom, I tried on MY dress and fell in love. My Mom and the saleswoman agreed that my face lit up when I put it on and I felt gorgeous in it! I didn't want to take it off! I tried on a couple more with a similar look/neckline/etc and they couldn't compare. We bought it that day! So, to answer your question, I found "IT"

Like other ladies said: Have fun with it! You'll find THE dress for YOU (or maybe you already have!)

I knew my dress was it without ever seeing it in person. I saw it in a magazine and said "THAT is the dress I am wearing"

I tried on one that was similar (the same cut fromt the same designer) but never actually put MY dress on until it was shipped to me.

Great thread!

I went in without any notion of what my dress would look like. While I had poured through several magazines and identified some dresses that I thought were particularly beautiful, I started gown shopping without any preconceived notion of what I should or wanted to wear.

That being said, through the course of shopping, I started to pick up on what styles I did and didn't like. I thought I might have liked to have cap sleeves on my gown, but found them too restricting. Then I thought a halter, and while I thought the style was very flattering, it seemed like the weight of the dress was falling on the back of my neck.

Through trial and error, I decided I wanted my dress to be strapless, have a sweetheart neckline, be a slim A-line, and have a smaller train. One day, on a whim, I walked into a local bridal shop, saw what would be my dress and knew I had to try it on--it was gorgeous! I made an appointment the following day and after spending about a half hour in it parading in front of the mirror with a smile across my face, I walked out of the bridal shop, sat down in my car and bawled.

I called my mother and kept saying, "It's so pretty. It's so pretty. It made me feel as pretty as I want to be on my wedding day. It's just so pretty." After about the 25th "It's so pretty," I knew it was the one and ordered it three days later.

I tried on quite a few and had one that I really liked that I almost bought. The next few times I went shopping, I looked for dresses in the same style. I saw a gorgeous dress on display but it wasn't what I was looking for so I passed it by originally. My MaOH convinced me to try it on and it was perfect! I just knew it was THE ONE even though I hadn't tried on anything like it before.

Thanks ladies...My mind keeps going back to the one gown in particular...but I feel like I can't quite be sure until I go to a few more places. I have another trip planned for next week and have several stores in mind that I still want to look at! I am a BIG shopper and love to go, and this is the ultimate! :) So I don't mind going and trying on everything, I am sure it will hit me and I will know for sure after a few trips!! :) Keep the stories coming though, I love reading about how you all found your dress!!! :) :)

I only went once to try on dresses. Mt trip got cut short...family emergancey. I actually saw my dress in a mag and then on line. I never tried it on. When I saw it in the mag I knew it was the one. I loved it. I got all teary eye and just knew.
I ordered my dress without trying it one and without seeing it in person. I never tried it on till it came in. I must say that I fell in love with it when I saw it in person.

The only thing I wish I could do over would be to have that chance to try on a lot of dresses. Stuff happens and you have to roll with the punches.

Interesting that we both did the same thing since our dresses are from the same designer AND I haven't found a SINGLE other person with a Sincerity dress!!

I never tried on a single dress.

I looked on Davids Bridal website and saw prices and was heart broken.. I knew that was too much for my budget.

I looked on ebay and found my dress and KNEW it was the one I wanted :) I bid and no second thoughts. I knew even more it was mine when I went to my first fitting.

I tried on 3 at the first store I went to and fell in love with 1 dress but it was over $1000. I just can't justify spending that much on a dress I will wear once.
Second store was having a closing sale and everything had to go. I found the exact dress I wanted for $300 and it fit perfectly. :)

I know, this sounds horrible.....

The dress that I'm wearing, that I absolutely KNEW was "the one", is a dress I tried on when engaged to my ex-fiance. :hide:

When I met my FH, and he proposed, I knew exactly what dress I was going to wear without even thinking about it.

The ex thought it was too "weddingy" for us - second weddings for both of us.

Poo on him - I'm wearing the perfect dress for the man who was meant to be. :)

I went to two places to try on dresses. Once I put on THE dress I knew. I didn't look like some one trying on dresses, I looked like a BRIDE.

This is a GREAT thing to remember! :) I am going again tomorrow to two shops and I am keeping this is mind...I think when I went last time I just loved all the dresses, but might have just liked them and like trying them on...I need to remeber I want the one that makes me feel like the BRIDE! Thanks jillian! :jump4joy:

You're welcomed. How was dress shopping?

Lela
07-27-2006, 09:00 PM
Maybe you've already been shopping and it's too late, but here's what happened with me- I put on a dress at David's Bridal and walked out of the dressing room and a couple of BMs and my mom and FMIL teared up and said "that's the one!" and I thought so too because it felt great and it made them cry so it had to be the one, right?

But I went somewhere else just for the fun of it and tried on a dress that the saleslady wanted me to try on, and I knew I wouldn't like it. I wanted an A-line NOT ball gown, off white because I'm so pale, probably halter dress with no crazily untraditional embellishments, and this one was a bright white, strapless, ball gown with stripes on the bodice. I didn't like it when I got it on but the skirt was huge so it was fun to play with so I put it back on after I tried on a bunch of others and then I liked it a little more, then they had me walk down an aisle toward a mirror, when I noticed that the stripes were really quite pretty and not as stripey as I had originally thought, and then they turned off half the lights to simulate candlelight- and only THEN did I know it was MY dress. FMIL knew as soon as I put it on, though, how weird is that.

So anyway- as you're thinking about the dresses you tried on, don't dismiss any of them too readily, even if you didn't know the second you put it on that it was the right dress for you, because sometimes even THE dress has to grown on you!

Hi Gals! Well...I felt I should update! I did go shopping on Weds...my mom and I went to appointments at two stores. When I woke up on Weds I kind of had a funny feeling like this might be the day. So, the first store I went to I felt like I was getting closer, I found a Paloma Blanca and an Allure gown that I really LIKED, but I still wasn't convinced. So we stopped and had some lunch, and I told my mom about what you said Jillian, and she said, we will just keep looking until you feel that way! So, we hit up the next store and the consultant there was AWESOME. Actually, I had great shopping experiences at all the shops I went to :) , but she really paid attention to my likes and dislikes and the look I was going for for the wedding and reception. She pulled dresses that she thought I might like. As I finished trying on all the dresses that we had picked out together, she told me to hang on, and that she had one in mind. It was not like ANYTHING I had tried on, but I loved it...it took me a second once it was on because it was so unlike what I thought I would get...but once I really looked at it, I knew it was PERFECT...so I went back yesterday with my mom and BM and I GOT IT!! :jump4joy: I am so excited! I can't stop thinking about it!

So, thanks for the support gals, all your stories really helped me keep searching and not settle for something that was just "pretty"...this is "THE ONE"!!!!:jump4joy: :loveshower: :jump4joy:

QE2- YAY!!!! I'm so happy for you! I remember how excited you are right now... there were weeks after I got my dress when I would be in the middle of a test and all of a sudden I would remember how it had felt that first time, and I would giggle. :) I still can't help but picture my dress in my church building every time I go to church. So you've got lots of jumping up and down and heart-throwing ahead of you! Can we see pictures??

YAY that's so exciting!! Congrats!! Funny how it works, isn't it. :)

I didn't even want a wedding dress. I was trying on bridesmaids and prom dresses. I was cajoled into trying on a white one. I stepped up to the mirror and just couldn't tear my eyes away.... I kept turning and looking at the back and squealing about how pretty it was. I kept worrying though because I had only tried on a handful of wedding dresses... but I seriously could not stop thinking about or talking about that dress! So I got it. :D

I tried on THE ONE but couldn't afford it.

I ended up settling for a different dress and was never happy.

Finally, a couple months before the wedding, I decided I hated it and had a custom dress made that resembled THE ONE.
